After much leaks, delays, and some anticipation, iPhone users are finally beginning to get a text message from AT&T about how to hop onto the carrier's WiFi networks for free, including WiFi at Starbucks location. Seen as a goodwill gesture to some, the reality is that AT&T probably wants iPhone users to get off the mobile data network, which is more costly, and move them onto WiFi whenever available. Complete instructions can be found on the AT&T WiFi page:

In this schematic of plasmonic lithography, the plasmonic flying head produces nanoscale patterns onto the spinning disk covered with photo sensitive chemicals. Ultraviolet light is delivered through the flying head onto the plasmonic lenses, which are used as optical styluses in this process. The setup resembles a stylus playing a record on traditional LP turntables. (Liang Pan and Cheng Sun, UC Berkeley)

Emily Loren, 17, is assisted by a Los Angeles fireman during an earthquake drill at Bishop Alemany H.S. Thursday, Nov. 13, 2008, in the Mission Hills section of Los Angeles. Southern Californians dropped to the ground, covered their heads and held onto the furniture Thursday for a mock "Big One," an earthquake drill billed as the largest in U.S. history and aimed at testing everyone from state leaders to students who donned fake blood to play victims. At exactly 10 a.m., television news programs announced there was an earthquake disaster drill, then cut to cameras in school classrooms showing children ducking under their desks and holding onto them. A full day of mock post-earthquake exercises such as rescues, emergency medical care and news conferences was planned.

ackbar-trap.jpgA lot of hackers cling to the dream they'll become the next Kevin Mitnick, and get so famous they'll be able to parlay their notoriety into a paid gig programming or supervising computer security. Smart companies can capitalize on that greed: When software maker Valve was hacked and the code for its Half-Life 2 leaked onto the Internet in 2003, it offered Axel Gembe (a/k/a "Ago" a/k/a "DaGuy"), who claimed credit for the hack, a job. But the idea wasn't to get help with their network, it was to lure the hacker onto American soil where he could be arrested.

alphadogg writes "Northwestern University researchers have developed a system that gives a heads up about traffic problems on the Internet, where there is no central management system. Their Network Early Warning System (NEWS), which latches on to a popular BitTorrent client, is designed to spot problems by encouraging feedback from end users who are experiencing problems. 'You can think of it as crowd sourcing network monitoring,' said associate professor Fabián Bustamante. He has a track record with BitTorrent users, having developed the popular Ono plug-in for speeding up P2P interactions."

Barely one year into a five-year deal that includes not just the Stanford Super Series but a quadrangular tournament in England and, potentially, a Stanford team in the English Premier League as well, the ECB is having second thoughts.
