iPod touch 16GB

After spending a couple of months with the iPhone, it's hard to pick up the iPod touch and not think about what could have been. If only video looked as good on the touch as it does on the iPhone. If only Apple had compromised on the iPod's sleek lines to add a couple of unobtrusive volume buttons (or offered a headset that included remote controls). If only the whole iPod-as-PIM-concept had been thought through to the point where both contacts and calendar events could be entered on the iPod. If only I could use my old video accessories with my new iPod.

HELOC is not interest-only forever

Is it true that on a home equity line of credit (as with an interest-only loan), one only pays the interest each month, and not part of the principal?

Implementing Windows Server 2008's Read-Only Domain Controller

One of the most touted features of Windows Server 2008 is the Read-Only Domain Controller (RODC). The RODC is a domain controller deployed after a traditional domain controller that contains the schema, configuration, domain, application directory partitions, and partial attribute set schemas of an Active Directory database in a read-only fashion.

New Developments as eBay Moves Forward with PayPal-only Plans

If you wondered whether sellers had legitimate concerns over eBay's new PayPal-only policy in Australia, you need only read Kevin Tyerman's submission to that country's Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) to understand the issues they believe are at stake. Tyerman's 7-page document - complete with footnotes and citations - is accessible on the ACCC website along with about 350 others, many of them from eBay sellers.

Australian regulator blocks eBay's PayPal-only plan

EBay Inc. said yesterday it will postpone plans to make its PayPal system the only way to pay for deals on its auction site in Australia after the antitrust regulator said it would reduce competition. Australia was the first place where eBay was planning the PayPal-only system. The plan angered some users who said using PayPal would cost them more than other payment methods, and that eBay was just interested in increasing revenue for PayPal, which it owns. The government's Australian Competition and Consumer Commission opened an investigation into the plan and considered submissions from Australian banks and users of the online auction site claiming the restrictions were unfair. EBAY (Nasdaq) rose 15 cents (U.S.) to $28.23.

One molecule thick nanotechnology membranes take shape

(Nanowerk Spotlight) Since its discovery in 2004, graphene has created quite a buzz among scientists (Nanotechnology researchers go ballistic over graphene). The reason they are so excited is that two-dimensional crystals (it's called 2D because it extends in only two dimensions - length and width; as the material is only one atom thick, the third dimension, height, is considered to be zero) open up a whole new class of materials with novel electronic, optical and mechanical properties. For instance, the ultimate size limit for a nano-electromechanical system (NEMS) would be a nanoscale resonator that is only one atom thick, but this puts severe constraints on the material; as a single layer of atoms, it should be robust, stiff, and stable. Graphene, the simplest of the 2D conjugated carbon nanomaterials, could fit that bill.

Rumors Of A Nokia Linux Cellphone Are A Bit Of A Leap

A couple of sites have picked up on a Reuters story titled “Nokia (NYSE: NOK) eyes wider usage of Linux in cellphones”—I reckon this is a sub-editing mistake, since the article only loosely links Nokia mobile phones with the Linux operating system. There’s quotes from two Nokia people, but both appear to be about Nokia’s Linux-based Internet Tablet range rather than an expansion into mobile phones. A Nokia spokesperson told MocoNews: “At this point, Linux is only being used on the tablet (non-cellular) products, and Nokia has not announced any cellular products with the Linux-based platforms...Nokia also doesn’t comment on products it hasn’t announced yet.” That doesn’t mean Nokia will never have a Linux-based handset, but it’s likely to only produce them when there’s a demand rather than champion the OS.

Long-term Observations Reveal Patterns in Saturn's Atmosphere

Reading something like this makes me hopeful that we're no longer in the infant stage of our understanding of our solar system: we've been patient and observant while growing in our knowledge. Scientists have discovered a wave pattern, or oscillation, in Saturn's atmosphere only visible from Earth every 15 years. This discovery was made only because we've been studying Saturn from ground based telescopes for about 22 years. Combined with the Cassini spacecraft's observations of temperature changes in the giant planet's atmosphere over time, we're gaining a better understanding of Saturn and discovering not only how unique it is, but also that Saturn has something in common with Earth. Our own planet has these oscillations too, and so does Jupiter.

Ballpen art

Ones writing instrument, like the pad paper, was, at the playground of the public school named Lakan Dula Elementary on Solis Street, Gagalangin, Tondo, Manila, where I learned my 3Rs, a mark of ones stature. The grade ones had fat, black, lead pencils sticking out from their army surplus backpacks; the grade fours had the slender and varicolored, ones inserted in the middle of their writing notebooks. And only the grade six had fountain pens clipped to their shirts, for only the graduating class wrote themes; and themes had, teacher said, to be written only in ink that was kept in a bottle labeled Quink. Trusty symbols of status in the journey from tender to teenage, pencils and fountain pens were thus held in love and awe.

Only Buddy Shivraj was prepared to take a risk on a grand scale for the sake of Cricket World Cup

I must commend the Guyanese press for highlighting the anticipated change of ownership of Guyana’s leading international hotel at Providence, although I sensed a veiled grudge against Buddy Shivraj. For me, regardless of Shivraj’s background, once he does legitimate business and at the same time adheres to the rule of law, he is entitled like any other citizen of the free world to turn a profit, be it windfall, abnormal gains or high rate of return. With respect to this business transaction, the Guyanese public ought to only concern itself with the extent of any loss or gain to the treasury and why and what the sociological impact to the greater society is.
