Awhile ago, I needed a new printer. Nothing fancy, just something for my home office. I’d settled on an HP all-in-one. But when I went into Best Buy, not once did any of the blue-shirted customer service reps offer to assist me, but that’s just as well. That’s not what I found to be rude. Rather, once I’d picked a printer, I had to get an employee to either retrieve my selection from the back room or from one of the mountainous stacks above the display shelves. But after approaching three different blue shirts, I noticed a trend: they run away from you.

Gadget lovers were dealt a blow on Wednesday when two researchers outlined what they called a "hole" during a Black Hat presentation. "The attacker can forcibly install Google Gadgets; they can read the victim's search history once a malicious gadget has been installed in some specific circumstances; they can attack other Google Gadgets; they can phish usernames and passwords from victims, and so on," said Robert Hansen, also known as RSnake, a founder of security consultancy SecTheory. "Really, the sky is the limit, once the browser is under the control of an attacker. And that point is exacerbated by the fact that people trust Google be a trustworthy domain, making the attacks even easier."

Most of the discussion on this blog seems to focus on figuring out how to identify biases. We implicitly assume that this is the hard part; that biases can be really sneaky and hard to ferret out, but that once youve identified a bias, correcting it is pretty straightforward and mechanical. If youve figured out that you have a bias that causes you to systematically overestimate the probability of a particular kind of event happening by .2, you simply subtract .2 from future estimates (or whatever). But it seems to me that actually correcting a bias can be pretty hard even once its been identified. For example, I have a tendency to swing a bit too late at a (slow-pitch) softball. Im sure this bias could be at least partially corrected with effort, but it is definitely not simply a matter of saying to myself: swing .

Robot Johnson (www.robotjohnson.com), Charlottes premier sketch comedy troupe, will return to the Charlotte Comedy Theatre on October 11th to workshop new material. The group of local jokesters have been performing at Spirit Square since May, mainly showcasing material originally workshopped in the small space in back of The Graduate. Charlotte Comedy Theatre was a tremendous place for us to hone our material and figure out what would work once we got uptown, says David Golden, writer and founding member of Robot Johnson. The folks at The Graduate have been wonderful to us and were very excited about building our next run of shows there. Much like their original run at Charlotte Comedy Theatre which lasted from December 2007 until April of this year Robot Johnson will perform once a week, with a new show every two weeks.
