With a significant price gap between the Olympus E-520 and the E-3, Olympus has long had a pretty big hole in its dSLR lineup — a hole populated by extremely popular competitors like the Nikon D90, the Canon EOS 40D, and the Canon EOS 50D. But with the announcement of the E-30, it looks like Olympus is entering the ring swinging.

When looking for an Olympus DSLR, most people want the high-end E-3 but the $1,499 is enough to put most off. Consumers have got the choice to go for the E-520, but that has not got half the features of the E-3. Olympus has come up with something in between, the E-30 DSLR.

Olympus has shown a mock-up of its next Four Thirds E-system DSLR. This is a conventional - if the word can be used - DSLR, rather than a non-reflex, mirror-less, Micro Four Thirds camera, which Olympus has also revealed plans for producing (see separate story coming soon).

The Olympus digital SLR lineup has been missing a midrange offering to suit folks who want a bit more camera than the $649.99 (with 14-42mm kit lens) E-520 and don’t need the pro-level features of the $1,699 (body-only) E-3. The newly announced Olympus E-300 drops right in between the two, with an estimated street price of $1,299 (body-only) when it ships in January 2009. This places the 12.3-megapixel shooter in direct competition with the recently released 15.1-megapixel Canon 50D ($1,399, body-only) and 12.3-megapixel Nikon D90 ($995.99, body-only).

Olympus today tackled the absence of a mid-range digital SLR in the E-system lineup with the E-30, a step between the entry-level E-520 and the more professional E-3. The 12.3-megapixel camera has the faster and more accurate 11-point autofocus performance of the higher-end E-3, an electronic level to ensure straight landscape shots and image stabilization built into the sensor rather than just the lens. Simultaneously, though, it also carries beginner-oriented features such as face detection and live visual effects dubbed Art Filters.

Olympus has announced firmware updates for several of its lenses to allow their use with the Panasonic DMC-G1. The updated lenses are the 35mm F3.5 Macro, 25mm F2.8 pancake, 35-100mm F2 and 40-150mm F4.0-5.6. Once upgraded, the lenses will be 'compatible' with the G1. It's unclear whether the 35mm Macro and 35-100mm lenses will be able to autofocus (we're looking into it), but the 25mm pancake and 40-150mm certainly will.

Only yesterday we learned of Olympus's entry to the mid-range DSLR game with the E-30 and now the camera's had its first hands-on over at DPReview. And it seems ok: the team liked the fact that it had many of the features of the pro E-3—like the 2.7-inch 230,000-pixel viewscreen and 1/8000th seconds shutter speed—while being a little smaller and having those "art filters" for real-time image manipulation. The pitch/roll correction system got a thumbs up too, as did its nine aspect ratio options. We'll have to wait for a bigger hands-on to get the full skinny, but it looks promising for now. [DPReview]
