Big Freddie Mac attack: Best of the Boards/Blogs

We have all seen our investments plummet these last few months. Hedge funds liquidation is one of the reasons. The psychological fear is also one of the reasons driving prices down. And not just stock prices, but most commodity prices. This is the main reason that I am optimistic about what is to come. Even though oil consumption is down, the developing world's oil consumption keeps rising. The large oil companies are not replacing their depleting reserves. The major oil companies are buying back shares, like SVM is doing, instead of putting that

Oil Exploration Leads to Video of a Mysterious Elbowed Squid

eldavojohn writes "A rare glimpse from Shell Oil of a giant squid brings to light the strange relationships some deep sea marine biologists have with drilling companies. The video of the squid (Magnapinna) is very rare as this creature remains largely a mystery to science. While some are concerned of a conflict of interest, biologists and big oil sure make for strange bedfellows. The video is from 200 miles off the coast of Houston, TX and about 4,000 feet down." Looking at this creature gives me the willies, frankly.

US MMS seeks more offshore Virginia oil, gas drilling research

The US Minerals Management Service will hold a workshop next month to decide what environmental research needs to be expanded in preparation for a possible oil and gas lease sale off the coast of Virginia. Scientists will present findings on how oil and gas development would impact fisheries, marine mammals and the local economy in Virginia. MMS announced earlier this year it would begin the process of deciding whether to hold a lease sale on a wedge of offshore real estate in federal waters 50 miles from the Virginia coast. A long-standing congressional moratorium on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts was allowed to expire in September, opening the Virginia area to leasing as early as 2011. But congressional Democrats have vowed to revisit the issue next year, which could lead to its closure again.

Why oil prices keep dropping

It doesn't feel like it, but we got a raise this week. The plunging price of oil, which prompted OPEC to announce a 1.5 million barrel a day production cut, has put money in the pockets of recession-worried consumers. "It follows that there's going to be some spending effect," said Francisco Blach head of commodities research at Merrill Lynch in London.
