US MMS seeks more offshore Virginia oil, gas drilling research

The US Minerals Management Service will hold a workshop next month to decide what environmental research needs to be expanded in preparation for a possible oil and gas lease sale off the coast of Virginia. Scientists will present findings on how oil and gas development would impact fisheries, marine mammals and the local economy in Virginia. MMS announced earlier this year it would begin the process of deciding whether to hold a lease sale on a wedge of offshore real estate in federal waters 50 miles from the Virginia coast. A long-standing congressional moratorium on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts was allowed to expire in September, opening the Virginia area to leasing as early as 2011. But congressional Democrats have vowed to revisit the issue next year, which could lead to its closure again.

MMS Moves Forward with Virginia Offshore Lease Sale Preparations

The US Minerals Management Service is continuing to make preparations for a sale of federal oil and gas leases off the coast of Virginia three years from now. Virginia has been penciled in for a lease sale in late 2011 as part of the agency's current 2007-2012 five-year leasing program. But potential offshore exploration and production is still in limbo, because either President-elect Barack Obama or the Democratic-controlled Congress could reinstate bans on leasing in federal waters.

McAfee (MFE), McKesson (MCK), and Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) are loved by analysts and investors alike; contrarians beware

With selling pressure dominating Wall Street in recent weeks, some investors are looking to exit the market altogether. However, these investors could be missing out on many potentially lucrative opportunities. I have selected 3 such opportunities from today's Schaeffer's Tool Box filter: "Stocks showing heavy all-around optimism." Specifically, McAfee (MFE), McKesson (MCK), and Diamond Offshore Drilling (DO) appear to be prime targets for contrarian investors, given their respective poor technical performances and excessive investor optimism. But before we dive in to the particulars, let's take a closer look at the filter that brought us today's bearish Tool Box selections.

US indicts UBS wealth management head

UBS suffered its biggest blow yet in the US investigation into its offshore banking activities for rich American clients as US authorities said they had indicted Raoul Weil, the Swiss bank’s head of global wealth management. The US Department of Justice indictment also said other senior unnamed UBS’s executives were involved as alleged “unindicted co-conspirators”. Separately, the indictment includes detailed allegations about how other, more junior, managers sought to circumvent US tax rules over a period of years. The DoJ claims Weil used the expression “toxic waste” to refer to the US business because of its acute sensitivity. In a statement Tuesday night, UBS said Weil would relinquish his duties pending resolution of the matter and said the bank was “fully committed” to continuing co-operating with the probe.
