Amazon.com's web storage service, Amazon S3, went offline this weekend, taking web sites offline, disrupting image loading at hundreds of web sites and other services. According to Amazon.com's AWS status pages, the service went offline around 9:06AM, due to what the firm described as "elevated error rates" in the system; the company had service restored fully by 5:13PM. Sites affected by the outage included online photo site Smugmug, and Internet messaging service Twitter, both of which use Amazon S3 for image storage.

UGO writes: "When I read this on Kotaku one bit jumped out at me that I think needs some exploration. You see, the piece gives some details about the 1.5 patch for Warhawk. They mention something's that are obvious, like trophies and custom soundtracks and some fun things like, new paint and insignia schemes. Here's what I like, the brief mention of offline tutorials. I want to know how robust this new offline mode is. Are talking a few quick challenges? How about the ability to play against bots? Remember Bots?

When challenged on what they're doing, organizations like the RIAA and the IFPI will often claim that they're just trying to help musicians. That's obviously untrue, as they represent the record labels -- who have a long history of an antagonistic relationship with the musicians they work with. We're seeing more and more cases where this conflict is being made quite clear as the RIAA and IFPI attacks fan actions that the musicians in question would prefer be left alone. Reader Xavier sends in this example of a music blogger who received a cease and desist from the IFPI that not only contained numerous mistakes, but was disputed by the musician himself.
