The National Music Publishers Board didn't get their request to the Copyright Royalty Board for a larger cut of digital music sales, putting a definitive end to a miniature media crisis over the "possible" shutdown of iTunes. Apple threw a minor shit-fit over the prospective hike last year, insinuating that they might not be able to continue business if they were "no longer able to do so profitably" (what business sense!), after which the British press decided that music was going to go away forever, or something. In any case, iTunes' profitability was never really at stake, Apple wasn't actually planning to shut down the largest music retailer in the US, and the press needs to calm down. [BBC]

Though a number of blogs earlier this week stated the exact same thing, the New York Times today confirms that T-Mobile will be the first wireless carrier to sell a Google OS-based phone starting this fall. Videos of the new HTC "Dream" with Google's Android OS have been circulating for the last week, and the Times claims that T-Mobile, Google and HTC all hope to officially announce the phone next month. It's still a bit strange that Google's wireless broadband centric OS is debuting on the least developed of all third generation carrier networks (T-Mobile's HSDPA network has only so far been deployed in NYC and Las Vegas).

Check out the Hong Kong Apple store online and you'll see a couple of lines of text that'll tempt, tease and beguile you if you're dreaming of an unlocked iPhone 3G: "iPhone 3G purchased at the Apple Online Store can be activated with any wireless carrier. Simply insert the SIM from your current phone into iPhone 3G and connect to iTunes 8 to complete activation." About $700 will get you an unlocked 8GB version, and the 16GB is just $800.
