As most owners of Apple's popular iPhone 3G know, it contains built-in Wi-Fi networking similar to that of a laptop computer. Some iPhone 3G owners don't realize, however, that their phone will automatically connect to certain wireless access points without their knowledge. The only robust way to prevent these unexpected connections is to turn off Wi-Fi on the iPhone 3G when not using it. More - Turn Off Your iPhone 3G Wi-Fi Connections For Safety

imageGawker Media’s Nick Denton is taking a defensive crouch ahead of the gathering economic storm. In a memo to staff (first posted by SAI), Denton announced that the blog network would lay off 19 people at certain blogs that have proven difficult to commercialize, including ValleyWag, Consumerist and Fleshbot. At the same time, the network will be adding 10 staffers at its more commercially-oriented sites: Gizmodo, Kotaku, Lifehacker and Gawker. Earlier this year, the company sold off three sites, and it has pruned the hedges in the past, but Denton predicts it’ll be different this time: But now the credit crisis is clearly going to affect every sector of the economy. Advertising buys typically plunge after the Christmas shopping season, and 2009 is obviously going to be exceptionally difficult.

I made one completely off-the-mark prediction for 2007 in my blog : “The iPhone would have disappointing sales.” I made up for it in a 2008 prediction: “Apple’s greatest innovation in the iPhone is its browsing capability, and as a result the mobile Internet will finally take off.” The mobile internet was predicted to take off in the late ’90s, with over $1 billion invested in startup companies back then.

Warwickshire secured promotion, and now need just four points to grab the Division Two title off Worcestershire, after a dramatic final-day, six-wicket victory charge against Essex at Chelmsford. The match appeared to be heading for a draw as John Maunders (107) and Ravi Bopara (133) added 241 for the second wicket. But Ian Salisbury sparked a rapid collapse as Essex lost nine for 69, leaving Warwickshire to knock off 144 in 45 overs. They cruised home with plenty of time to spare, Darren Maddy hitting 63 off 99 balls. However, their real final-day matchwinner was Salisbury, who turned the game on its head, with a spell of 6 for 27 in 11.4 overs. Maunders hit his first Championship hundred and Bopara continued the form he has shown most of the summer with his fourth century.

Zimbabwe earned a win they barely deserved, claiming a 3-1 victory in a bowl-out, after scrambling to a tie against Canada as the second day of T20 Canada tournament at King City produced a thrilling game. Zimbabwe, who slumped to 61 for 5 in the 11th over, recovered through a stand of 53 between Tatenda Taibu and Elton Chigumbura, but still needed 10 off the last over. Harvir Baidwan took two wickets in two balls, but Prosper Utseya and Tawanda Mupariwa squeezed nine off the next four balls, with Utseya run out off the final delivery trying to win the match.

That's a picture of my Samsung Jack (Blackjack II) sitting face down on my floor. That's the way it looked when I came into my office yesterday morning and saw it laying there. I was completely puzzled because I knew I hadn't dropped it. The phone was no worse for wear, so I put it back up under my monitor where I normally keep it. A few minutes later, my smartphone fired off a notification, where it the proceeded to vibrate itself off my monitor stand and onto my desk. Aha! So that's what happened - over night it must have vibrated its way off my desk and onto the floor. Does that seem screwy to anybody else? No phone should have a vibration mode so powerful that it moves the phone across a desk and onto the floor. Needless to say, I've change my normal profile from vibration+sound to be just sound.
