Warne's intellect, observation complement his bowling genius

INDIA’S emphatic victory by a record margin in the second Test recently was not only humiliating, to say the least, for the touring Australians but it also made their captain Ricky Ponting publicly lament the loss of their match winners Glenn McGrath and Shane Warne through retirement.

NASA and USAID Bring Earth-Observation Benefits to Africa

WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- WASHINGTON, Nov. 21 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- NASA, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and their international partners cut the ribbon Friday in Nairobi, Kenya, for SERVIR-Africa. The SERVIR-Africa system integrates the satellite resources of the United States and other countries into a Web-based Earth information system. This effort puts previously inaccessible information into the hands of local scientists, government leaders and communities to help address concerns related to natural disasters, disease outbreaks, biodiversity and climate change.

New Ideas for NASA 2020 Space Observation Missions

When thinking of the vastness of space, on how little we know and have seen of it and on how much there is still left to discover and prove, choosing the next missions that will be set in motion in a decade or so seems to be the most difficult thing to do. So, what will it be - dark matter, Earth-like planets, universe formation and evolution, black holes or other, new mysterious objects and phenomena? This is what preoccupies NASA's experts who have embarked on a mission to set priorities.

Interesting Observations About iPhone Numbers

One largely missed observation from the iPhone sales numbers that emerged as a part of Apple’s last earnings report concerned the number of iPhones reported as sold, versus the number of iPhones in channel inventory.

PARIS -- The GeoEye-1 high-resolution optical Earth observation satellite will not enter commercial service until December due to software glitches on the satellite's attitude-control system that went undetected in ground testing, GeoEye Inc. officials said Nov. 11.

One of the more unexpected discoveries was the observation of new domains of gene expression that marked clusters of cells not previously known to be distinct.

Charon Imaged by Amateur Astronomers

This past summer, a group of seven amateur astronomers from Italy worked on an observation campaign of Pluto, with hopes of capturing an image of its moon, Charon. "Imaging Charon is very difficult and nobody has spotted it with amateur equipment, so far," said Daniele Gasparri, one of the members of the group. The team made several attempts, and finally, one member of the group, Antonello Medugno, took this interesting image. "After many calculations," said Gasparri, "we are sure that this image shows clearly Pluto and Charon, for the first time with amateur equipment." Comparing the image to the graphic which shows the position of Pluto and Charon on the same date, it's obvious, they nailed it! This is quite a feat considering their equipment was an "amateur" 14-inch telescope! Also, as The Bad Astronomers points out, Charon wasn't disc

5 Years At Mars: The Best of Mars Express

In December, the Mars Express spacecraft will celebrate the fifth anniversary of its arrival at Mars. In observation of this milestone the German Aerospace Center DLR has put together a collection of some of the best images from the High-Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC), the main camera on board the spacecraft. The stunning, high resolution images this instrument has produced of Mars' surface are nothing short of jaw dropping, and they have provided new perspectives and new discoveries about our neighboring planet. One of the iconic images from Mars Express is the image above of water ice inside a crater near Mars North Pole.

Planetary Disk Quartz Spotted

The Spitzer Space Telescope has recently made a startling discovery as it was scouring the skies in thorough observation of five young planet-nascent disks approximately 400 light years away from the Earth. While it was largely known that crystallized dust particles constantly lump up into larger versions, ultimately the size of planets, the discovery of silica-based (oxygen and silicon) cristobalite and tridymite crystals in the protoplanetary disks surprised them.

NASA MEPAG: Analysis of arguments for and against removing the sample cache hardware from MSL

The primary benefit of the sample cache on MSL is the potential increase in the likelihood of Mars Sample Return. The primary quantifiable risk of retaining the cache is in mission operations. The immediate concern is the impact of the cache on implementation of the sample observation tray and possible enhancements to the sample delivery system that may be needed for the MSL analytical instruments to meet their measurement goals.

Space Spiders and Butterflies

The link between the Earth and space projects gets a new, more mundane valency, as hundreds of K-12 students from the University of Colorado in Boulder will get to participate in a biology experiment taking place aboard the International Space Station. More specifically, they will be involved in a thorough observation and comparison study involving butterflies and spiders and their behavior in zero-gravity conditions.
