1,000 apps today, 10,000,000 iPhones tomorrow

This post is brought to you by the number 1,001. That's the news that Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Apple 2.0 brings today, that number being how many applications are available at Apple's App Store as of Monday night. As DeWitt notes, that is "roughly double" the number from just over two weeks ago when the App Store opened. To put this in further perspective, Apple announced over 10 million downloads from the App Store in the first weekend. Ten days later, during the conference call for the company's fiscal third quarter, that number had grown to 25 million. That's another big number, but it will be small next to the press release that is coming.

Official UK Video Game Charts: Star Wars and the Apocalypse

It's Number 1. In fact, it's Number 1 on every format under the sun except the Wii (Number 3) and the DS (aaallll the way down at Number 39). 48% of the sales were on the 360, while the PS3 got 30%. That makes it the 10th best-selling game ever on each format.

Personal data

Personal data describes any information that can identify an individual. Phishing and other malicious Web sites often request personal data that, if given to the wrong person, can lead to identity theft. Personal data includes your mailing address, credit card number, IP address, phone number, email address, Social Security number, or any other number that is unique to you. Personal data is also known as personally identifiable information.

Mitochondrial DNA Copy Number Associated With Risk Of Kidney Cancer

Genetic factors were shown to influence the number of copies of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) in healthy cells. A lower mtDNA copy number was associated with an increased risk of renal cell cancer in a case-control study, researchers report in the July 29 online issue of the Journal of the National Cancer Institute.

Google lets advertisers measure ad views

Google developed a system that lets advertisers limit and measure the number of times users view ads on its partners' sites. Clients will be able to better place ads based on the number of views they get and the number of users that visit a Web site after seeing it, Mountain View-based Google said Thursday in an e-mailed statement. The technology will be available within months, Google said. The product comes out of Google's acquisition of online ad company DoubleClick, bought in March to boost sales of promotions with pictures and videos.

EA Patches Spore, Eases DRM

EA has released the first patch for Spore, the purpose of which is to fix a number of bugs and tweak some gameplay settings to be more entertaining. Some of the visual effects were upgraded as well. They've also officially responded to the complaints about Spore's DRM, stating their intention to increase the number of allowed installations to five and to set up a system to "de-authorize" systems in order to reclaim the installation credit. They plan to allow multiple screen names per account, which was an issue for many families trying to play the game. This comes not long after EA made similar changes to the DRM of upcoming RTS Red Alert 3, and after Spore's DRM protest spread to in-game creature designs. Reader SoopahMan notes that users in EA's Spore tech support forum are reporting a number of new issues caused by the patch.

VMware Bug Is Worse Than a Glitch To Some Users

With VMware VI3 Update 1, VMware placed on their website an ISO image that had a bad installation. After a bit of tweaking, it was remastered with the same build number as the bad one. This was fixed by appending the character 'a' to the end of the build number. Should it not have been a new build number entirely?

New Mercator report on Brazilian payments

Boston, Aug. 6, 2008 -- The Brazilian payment card market has benefited greatly from the booming consumer credit market in Brazil and the strong economy and consumer spending growth in the country. Since 2001, the Brazilian card market more than tripled its number of cards in circulation, number of transactions, and total transaction value. Today, Brazil is one of the leading card markets outside of North American and Western Europe. If the current trends continue, by 2013 Brazil will likely become the third card market in the world by number of transactions, behind only the U.S. and China.

MP3 Player Top 5

Caught this latest update of the top MP3 player manufacturers from the Wall Street Journal. The provider of the data is, of course, NPD, a group whose figures we take with a grain of salt. No surprise here that Apple is number one in MP3, though with a market share that has grown from two-thirds market share to nearly three-out of four players. SanDisk remains at number two, but hey look...Microsoft's Zune line has moved into number three, albeit with a modest 4% share of the market. Still, that's better that the 2% held by Sony and Creative Labs. We are assuming that NPD is including portables that handle video too, simply because that would otherwise imply that Apple's shuffle, the only audio-only MP3 player in its line, has 71% of the market alone.
