IconThis is the second installment of the "Linux on the Opteron, are we ready?" article. Basically, it is a "where are we now?" article, noting that what once did work now does not, and others that did not work now do. The first article was published on OSNews almost three months ago. Since that time not too much has happened publicly in regards to the amd64 Linux situation, but a lot of people mailed to tell me that I should have checked out SuSE or the new Mandrake which was "about to be released" at that time. Also since that time I have upgraded the RAM and acquired a larger hard disk for the machine. I will give a brief rundown of the system as it stands now, what I tried to install on it, and what works.

A small deal for Macrovision… the company says it has acquired technology and the website of ThoughtWorthy Media, a vertical, TV-related search engine. The agreement was entered back into January by Gemstar (though unannounced until now), now part of Macrovision (NSDQ: MVSN). The ThoughtWorthy site (which just redirects now to TVGuide.com) allowed users to search for content found on TV, like music, and then purchase it. This functionality will now be part of TVGuide.com, an asset the company is keeping despite the planned disposal of the physical magazine. Besides the consumer-facing aspect to it, it also builds out Macrovision’s metadata capabilities, which includes the previously acquired All Music Guide. Release.

Show me a person who isn’t interested in saving money and I’ll show you a ghost! iPhone users now have the super economy scheme available to them where they can use the AOL Instant Messenger on their phone to send and receive SMS messages without paying for a plan or individual messages. The messenger is now available for download in the iPhone’s App Store and to start making use of the economic service, you’ll have to download and start it up. To send a free text message to a pal whose number is, say, (617) 555-6868, then all you have to do is send an IM to +16175556868. A confirmation message from AOL will tell you that your message has been sent, and if your pal replies reply you’ll receive it on your phone as an IM.

Comet W1 Boattini - Joe BrimacombeI wanted to see it myself before I said anything - but now it's confirmed. Comet W1 Boattini is now visible in the northern hemisphere! So what if you have to get up before dawn? While its overall brightness is good enough to be seen with the unaided eye, I needed a lot of help, and maybe you'd like some, too?

The iPhone 2.0 Pwnage Tool is now available, weighing in at 19.7MB. It came slightly earlier than expected, but I'm sure nobody's complaining that they can now unlock their iPhones and iPod touches a day early. Grab it on the iPhone Dev Site. It only jailbreaks, not unlocks the iPhone 3G, so you'll have to wait a little longer for that one. [iPhone Dev Blog]

An anonymous reader writes "The Industry Standard has put together a list of 10 dot-com stars from the Internet bubble of the late 1990s, and tracked down what happened to the services and their founders. A lot of the services are still around, albeit under new ownership, including eToys, Garden.com, and DrKoop.com. Others have been completely reinvented — Boo.com, an online clothing retailer that burned through $125 million in funding in the late 1990s, is now an online travel community. Of the founders, many were able to cash out early and/or achieve later online success. Excite's Joe Kraus and Graham Spencer later started JotSpot, which was bought by Google, and Kraus now directs work on Google's OpenSocial initiative. Others did not fare as well, such as two of the co-founders of Garden.

For all the damage to reputations that the Internet can cause, perhaps the greater anxiety that comes from online communication is the weightlessness. The Web can seem like a hall of mirrors -- nothing tangible, no binding, no watermarks, no notary public seals. Where, exactly, is it? How do we know any of it is true?
