With a Novell Nsure Solution, WPS Resources Corporation Offers Both Customers and Employees Secure Online Access to Personalized Information

WPS Resources Corporation, based in Green Bay, Wisconsin, is a holding company with both regulated and non-regulated, energy-related subsidiaries and 2002 revenues of more than $2.6 Billion. WPS Resources Corporation wanted to improve customer service with an interactive portal to offer customers online access to view energy usage, pay bills, and access other services. To provide such access, the company needed a secure identity management solution to offer personalized content, and to protect both corporate and customer data. WPS Resources began searching for a scalable secure identity management solution to provide user authentication for its customer portal and employee intranet. They selected Novell eDirectory to provide the identity foundation for a Novell Nsure solution consisting of Novell iChain and Novell DirXML.

Boycott Novell: Champion of freedom or den of paranoia?

Few sites about free software attract more controversy than Boycott Novell. Founded in 2006 in response to the first Microsoft-Novell deal, as its name suggests, the site has evolved more recently into a site for commentary and investigation of any subject that might be a threat to free software. To its regular readers, this subject matter makes Boycott Novell -- like Groklaw, its apparent inspiration -- a defender of the community. But to others, especially those who have been the subject of its articles, the site is full of illogical arguments and undeserved attacks, and an embarrassment that only brings the community into disrepute.

Boycott Novell Protesters Manhandled In India

James Mathew writes "This is an interesting story from Kerala, India, where the ruling Communist Party organized a national conference in its efforts to hijack the Free Software Movement, which has enviable roots in the state. They got Novell to sponsor it. On the second day of the conference, a few free software activists who displayed posters against Novell were manhandled by the organizers and police — typical of what is expected from them. Most of the snaps taken during the scuffle were forcefully deleted by the organizers, after seizing the protesters' mobile phones. Still they couldn't delete all. Here is another blow-by-blow account."

The Microsoft-Novell Linux deal: Two years later (InfoWorld)

Whatever the implications for the greater Linux and open source worlds, Novell says the Microsoft deal has been good for its Suse Linux and for IT shops that use both Suse and Windows. Customers wanted a "bridge between Microsoft Windows and Linux," says Microsoft's Hauser. Customers also wanted peace of mind over potential intellectual property disputes, since those can take products off the market or result in additional licensing fees. About 100 customers are covered by the Novell-Microsoft agreement, she notes.

Less than a year later, that community-elected board is now in place, and looking forward to its new role.
