Blog Buzz: Bailout Bill Fails, Barack Obama's Debate Bounce, Bracelet Wars

Prior to today's vote, no one could seem to agree on whether or not the bailout bill (also known as the "crap sandwich" or "a cow patty with a marshmallow in the middle of it") should pass—not economic experts and not lawmakers, even those from the same party. President Bush urged Congress to pass the bill, but House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer had no predictions on whether or not that would happen. It didn't. Postvote, U.S.News bloggers discuss the implications of the vote and our Jim Pethokoukis says he's "not sure what Plan B is now." Liberal and conservative bloggers say the bill's failure could be a serious blow to the McCain campaign. They're also placing blame on anyone involved, from Nancy Pelosi (because of her "rant") to the House Republicans (guilty of "irresponsible folly") to the House Democrats (who have the majority but s

Verizon robo-caller torments my household

Nine robo-calls in 24 hours, all from Verizon: Nothing could make them stop; not my wife's increasingly urgent pleas (I was away); not the hapless customer service reps who promised relief; not the "in-charge supervisor" who wasn't in charge; and, not even the ever-so-helpful individual who said the barrage was "a national problem" before adding, "We're suggesting that people just unplug their phones."

Reaffirming a mortgage in Chapter 7

I stated that I wanted to reaffirm my mortgage in court before my case was discharged, but now the mortgage company says they did not receive my agreement and I do not have a reaffirmation with them. I pay my payment timely, and if I do not have an agreement, what liability/status do I have? The only answer I can get from the company is "continue to pay and you can continue to live there." Do I have a legal obligation to stay, or can I move and not be charged with foreclosure?

Web Browser Wars: Google Looking Beyond Market Share

With the advent of Google's (GOOG) foray into Web browsers with Google Chrome, we have yet another contender for the title of Web Browser King. If you're not a die-hard web user this may not seem like a great title. Some Web browsers are better than others, yes, but these browsers are free anyway, so what's the point if one is more popular than another. Believe it or not, the business of Web browsers is pretty important, not to mention occasionally profitable. The popular websites of today may also be the operating systems of tomorrow.

Quake on iPhone Comes to Cydia Installer

That Quake game for the iPhone we wrote about a few months back has made it onto Cydia, the jailbreak application repository. Just Another iPhone Blog says it's not too slow and it doesn't make use of the accelerometer (so it's probably not the version we wrote about before), but it does play fairly well. Seeing as it's not the one we wrote about before, we're not sure if it's even networked, but c'mon, Quake on iPhone! [Just Another iPhone Blog]

Top 10 Free MMORPG Games

The summer is almost over but some of you are still in vacation and besides your normal activities, some of you play mmorpg games. While there are many out here, not all people like the subscription models, so they play free mmorpg games. They are not exactly free because they all have shops that can offer you an advantage if you buy special items from there, but it’s not mandatory and in some, it’s not necessary at all if you know what you’re doing. Developers must get money someway in order to maintain the servers and the game, so that’s why we have the shops.

Gandhi 2.0 ? or Jeremy?s incredible piece of work on peace

COMMITMENT: Gotta admire anyone who sets aside time in his or her life to make the world a better place. Gotta worship a person who does it on such a large scale that conflicts cease for a day and kids are saved from polio by the thousands, the millions. Jeremy Gilleyis such a person. He’s not a special person, as such, he’s not smarter than most of us, he’s not more powerful, he’s definitely not richer. The thing about Jeremy Gilley which brings out my outmost respect and my complete admiration for this man is the fact that he’s an ordinary man with an extraordinary commitment: A human being with a larger than life problem, which he takes on with more fierceness, creativity and will than most of us would devote to anything or anyone in our life time.

The copyright issue is not being addressed in Carifesta

During all these Carifesta happenings, not once has the issue of copyright been seriously addressed. If I am wrong then the media has not adequately, if at all, given much coverage here. It is rather unfortunate because this issue has a direct impact on the lives and success of our creative professionals, our artists. With all the debate on governments’ contribution, or lack thereof, to the development of the arts, I believe it is time that this copyright issue be seriously addressed.

Four Out Of Five Do Not Trust Companies With Personal Data

Four Out Of Five Do Not Trust Companies With Personal Data - Four Out Of Five Do Not Trust Companies With Personal Data. Low levels of consumer trust in how businesses manage and secure customer data could put companies at risk, according to a study by Symantec. Nearly four out of five people in Britain believe their personal information is insecure in the hands of the companies that hold the data, according to a recent survey by Symantec Corp (Nasdaq: SYMC) and Moneysupermarket.com, the online price comparison site. The research was commissioned by Symantec to assess attitudes towards online risks from both a consumer and business perspective.

GTA IV Sales Not as Obscenely/Repulsively Huge as Expected, Barely 10 Million Sold

Companies, no matter how big or small, really like making money. This is no secret and, you know, God bless. Sometimes, though, their whining about not making enough of the stuff can be downright infuriating. A good example is Take-Two Interactive, makers of the overrated popular Grand Theft Auto video games. According to a recent report, sales of GTA IV are slowing considerably and not meeting the company's expectations.

Call for Artists: Not with a BANG but with an SUV

The North Okanagan Artists Alternative is calling for environmentally minded artists, writers and performers to take part in an exhibition to be held at Gallery Vertigo from October 7th to November 1st, 2008. "This is the way the world ends, not with a bang, but a whimper."(Eliot) How will the world end? According to T.S. Eliot, it will end with a whimper, and not a cataclysmic event. This NOAA Annual Members themed exhibition invites members think about this idea and to create works that address such environmental issues as air pollution, water and soil degradation, pesticide use, rampant urban sprawl, public transportation, abuse of fossil fuels, food hybridization, loss of wildlife habitat, animal extinction, etc. This is a chance for visual artists, musicians, actors, writers and caring citizens to express their concerns and raise awa

Ford's 65MPG Due In November, But Not In the US

computermesh writes "Ford has a vehicle that gets 65MPG and will not be released in the US. Why? Because they can not afford to! 'Ford's 2009 Fiesta ECOnetic goes on sale in November. But here's the catch: Despite the car's potential to transform Ford's image and help it compete with Toyota Motor (TM) and Honda Motor (HMC) in its home market, the company will sell the little fuel sipper only in Europe. "We know it's an awesome vehicle," says Ford America President Mark Fields. "But there are business reasons why we can't sell it in the U.S." The main one: The Fiesta ECOnetic runs on diesel.'"

Samsung Omnia Is No iPhone Killer, Not In a Million Years

I got to play for quite a long time with the Samsung Omnia, the iPhone-Killer wannabe with Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, here at IFA 2008. The verdict: it's not an iPhone killer, despite previous demos. In fact, it sucks. It has a poor interface, poor response time, buggy software, and it felt cheap and fat on my hand. I even thought that I was being even more thick than usual while trying it, but I got the Omnia expert lady to give it a marketdrone spin for me and her last sentence summarized it all: "Oh, naw it'z not verking at all. I think I haf too many tasks open. Sorry."

AMD Says Manufacturing Deal Does Not Violate Intel Processor Patents

The day after AMD announced a significant deal that will spin off its manufacturing facilities into a new joint venture company, AMD is defending its licensing agreement with Intel. In the wake of the deal, Intel said it would review its processor licensing agreement with AMD to ensure the deal does not violate any patent agreements. An AMD spokesman said the deal does not impact the chip licensing agreement with Intel.

First review of Silent Hill: Homecoming is not good

A snippet and score from the first review of Silent Hill: Homecoming is in, posted from Official Xbox Magazine over at Metacritic. The outlook? Not good. The snippet reads "From its leaden, cheap-shots-aplenty combat to its wild-goose chase through gray, same-y hallways filled with useless, placebo doorways to a story that takes much too long to get off the ground, its entire first half feels like a death march through a clunky hot mess." and scores the game 65/100. Although they presumably played with the 360 version, I doubt that there's a big difference between PS3 and 360 editions. Of course, that's only one review, and I expect we'll see others soon, but it's not a good start.
