The first big GOTY nominees are in - from Spike actually - and, much like the Oscars for linear entertainment (what was that called again?) the level of shock and surprise is limited only by the fact that there is no shock or surprise.

SAGAPONACK, New York: Among the nominees for this year's National Book Award in fiction, which will be presented Wednesday, is a book that some have complained is not exactly new: Peter Matthiessen's "Shadow Country," published by Modern Library, which is a one-volume compilation of three novels that Matthiessen published from 1990 to 1999: "Killing Mister Watson," "Lost Man's River" and "Bone by Bone." After the finalists were announced in October, there was a small flare-up in the blogosphere from readers who questioned whether "Shadow Country" should have been eligible. Others, who loved the three original novels just as they were, regretted that the one-volume version was 400 pages shorter.

Szentigrade writes "Popular Science is running a letter by Daniel Engber of the online Slate Magazine in which he offers the US Presidential nominees advice on using the full potential of the Internet upon their election into office. Some examples discussed in the letter include: a project already being developed that speeds up the patent approval process, a UK site that aims to improve government-citizen interactions, and perhaps most importantly, a call for government information to be 'presented in a standardized and widely used data format, like XML, so that anyone — in or out of government — could use and reconfigure it however they pleased.' Will 2009 be the first year of the E-President?"
