Nintendo DS Nintendo has issued two statements on the rumors of a new Nintendo DS, and neither is an outright denial. Over the weekend Nikkei Business Daily, a Japanese financial paper, reported that Nintendo will soon be announcing a new DS with a digital camera and music playback, set to be launched in Japan by the end of 2008. Nintendo has planned press briefings for Thursday in both Tokyo and San Fransisco, giving them two likely opportunities for such an announcement to take place.

Say what you will about Nintendo, but one thing's for certain; it's always been dominant in the mobile gaming market. The Nintendo DS is no exception, with 77.5 million sold worldwide, nearly 23 million in Japan. Compared to only 41 million Sony PlayStation Portables worldwide, with 10 million in Japan, the Nintendo DS is the sure winner thus far. However, for five straight months, the PSP has outsold the DS in Japan, and that trend is not sitting well with Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. Iwata is hoping to reverse that trend with its newsest iteration, the Nintendo DSi. Not only is the DSi thinner with a bigger screen, but it also sports a digital camera and an audio player. The DSi will go on sale in Japan on November 1st for 18,900 yen ($180), but won't be abvailable overseas until next year.

While the presentation had plenty to focus on for casual fans, between Wii Music and Wii Sports Resort, many in the hardcore crowd felt left out. Now Nintendo sales chief Cammie Dunaway, who was a major on-stage presence during that E3 presentation, has also talked frankly about the showing in an interview with VGChartz.com.

Nintendo is developing its first real update to the DS since the Lite and may be prepared to launch it soon, according to claims from alleged sources for the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri. The new upgrade would have an integrated camera and would use at least photos in games. Nintendo would also focus on expanding the handheld's role as a wireless data device and would create a more "user-friendly" look for the system. Prices would be kept under $189 in the company's home country and could see Nintendo release the new DS before the end of the year, according to the report.

Lucas123 writes "After gamers complained for the better part of a year, Nintendo finally came out with a solution to the Wii's lack of storage capacity — a 2GB SD card from which users can execute games, adding to the console's measly 512MB of onboard storage. The card is expected out in the Spring. With the ability to download, the card should allow users to store up to 60 games." This news came out of the same press conference that announced the Nintendo DSi we discussed earlier today. They made a number of other announcements as well, including Gamecube remakes for the Wii, updated to make use of the Wiimote, Club Nintendo coming to North America this year, and the Wii Speak Channel, an online voice chat utility.
