Slovenia-based Mercator has reported a 1% rise in net profit for the first nine months of the year to EUR36.4 million (USD52.3 million). Group net sales rose by 13% to EUR2 billion (USD2.8 billion), with sales in Slovenia rising by 5% and overseas sales rising by 34%. The retailer added that net profit in the first nine months reached 90 percent of the profit planned for the whole of 2008. "Despite a serious worsening of the conditions in the banking sector due to the global financial crisis, the financial operations of Mercator are undisturbed," the company said in a statement, adding that the retailer would continue to cut costs in the last quarter of 2008 to combat the consequences of the global financial crisis which has "a negative effect on the size and the structure of consumption".

Alpha Bank Serbia's pre-tax profit rose sharply in the first nine months of the year, to EUR 6.3 million, versus EUR 0.8 million in the respective period last year, the bank said.
