NikonNikon D90 Test photos : We have a full production test sample of the Nikon D90 SLR in the office at this moment, and we expect to publish a full Nikon D90 review soon. In the meantime, a Nikon D90 digital SLR camera is undergoing a thorough, standardized test in our DIWA Lab. Although our workflow is simply overwhelming with the Photokina 2008 in sight, we were still able to make a number of test images with the Nikon D90 today, and we used various Nikkor lenses for the occasion. The much-discussed video feature, which is unique at this moment, will undoubtedly be continued in future generations. However, for now, the Nikon D90 features this unique video function that puts Nikon in the spotlight again as a genuine innovator.

Nikon has bought a pot of gold paint and started slapping it around at the D60 factory. The result, as you see above, is a rather tacky looking "special'" edition called the Nikon D60 Black Gold. Is this a gift to the taste-deficient DSLR buyer? No. Nikon expects you to pay an extra $50 for this shiny golden coating, which earns the camera a place in our much coveted "Bling" category.

Nikon Rumors' D90-toting tipster sent them this juicy shot, which appears to confirm the rumored video recording mode on the D90. By the looks of the display there might even be full exposure control plus ISO settings for video, which is awesome if true, and audio recording too. No word on resolution yet, but let's hope Nikon's leading the charge with DSLR movie capture modes here. [Nikon Rumors]

The mystery of Nikon's Black Gold D60 might have just been solved, and man, it is not pretty. No really, it's a downright repulsive study in tackiness, if these pictures are to be believed (sadly, it looks like they should be). Nikon has liberally slathered the D60 with cheap gold paint aaaaaaand... that's it. And you get to pay an extra $50 to rock more shiny than the people who actually have taste and get a regular D60. I'm not sure who came up with this, but even Mr. T wouldn't use this camera. [Nikon Rumors, DP Review]

As happens with seemingly every new product release these days, there have been rumors circulating about the Nikon D90 for a while now. All of those can be confirmed or put to bed as Nikon officially annouced the D90 earlier today. It is a camera that is aimed squarely at the serious end of the amateur photography spectrum, with features filtering down from some of Nikon's higher end offerings, such as low noise even at high ISO settings (which you can push as high as 6400). Key features include the 12.3 megapixel image sensor, 3 inch live view display and 11-point auto focus. One thing that does stand out is the fact that the D90 can also record 720p video at 24fps (in clips up to 5 minutes long). The video mode will work with any of your lenses, so it has plenty of potential for some artistic shooting.

"Nikon today announced the D90 Digital SLR - successor to the D80. It's slated for availability some time (late?) September, at an ESP (estimated street price) of $999.95. At this point, I should mention that I'm a Canon user. I love my 5D and my treasure chest full of expensive L lenses. Point being, I'm so happy with Canon that it's rare for me to get excited about anything from the Nikon camp. In fact, this is the first time my eyes have wandered. [Forgive me, Canon, 'tis but a fling.] Oh, and we got some exclusive footage of the D90's movie mode in action, courtesy of professional photographer, Chase Jarvis."

When our Nikon Coolpix S52c review unit rolled in, we were enthused about what new techno-wizardry Nikon had brought to the table with its latest Wi-Fi enabled camera. Sadly, that enthusiasm faded fast when it became clear that our test camera was almost certainly cursed: I'm not one for superstition, but mysterious dead batteries, corrupted memory cards, and, in the end, an apparently fatal lens issue all make it seem that nothing in the last several weeks has worked out in this Coolpix's favor.

The Promise: Nikon's new D90 is the first digital SLR that can capture both still images and high-definition movie clips with sound. Because digital SLRs use a mirror to reflect light onto the eyepiece, the mirror needs to be moved out of the way in order to record video. To do this, the D90 employs its Live View mode to lock the mirror back so the camera can shoot HD clips directly from the imaging sensor. And because it can take any Nikon-compatible lens with built-in Vibration Reduction, shaky-handed auteurs can keep their movies looking steady. It's also supposed to take great 12.3-megapixel pictures.

Before the announcement of the Nikon D700, Nikon faithful already had arguably the most impressively stocked collection of pro-level photographic tools on the market: the highly regarded D3 anchors the top of the line with its full-frame sensor, and if you can settle for a smaller APS-C sized imager, the much more affordable D300 does a lot of what its big brother does for a lot less money. Between these two ends of the high-end spectrum, however, there's a fair bit of distance (and a price gap of around $3,000) to fill in the space occupied almost exclusively in terms of price and features by archrival Canon's 5D – an aging but affordable and very competent full-frame camera for under $3,000.
