Nextel plans 3G launch in 2009

BNamericas reports that Nextel Peru is planning to launch 3G services by mid-2009, citing local newspaper Gestion. In July last year, Nextel Peru won a mobile concession licence for the D and E bands covering the 1865MHz-1870MHz and 1945MHz-1950MHz blocks, and the 1882.5MHz-1895MHz and 1962.5MHz-1975MHz bands.

After a review of the iDEN business, Sprint said it intends to "retain and rejuvenate this important asset". Sprint said the iDEN network allows it to offer a unique service, not available with any other operator in the US. Marketing for the walkie-talkie service will continue to focus on iDEN's unique aspects. The company has extended its contract with equipment supplier Motorola for network and infrastructure support. Sprint also plans to launch new handsets, including the Motorola i576 on 2 November and the BlackBerry Curve 8350i later this year. Sprint plans to launch a total of eight new Nextel Direct Connect handsets in 2009, with five expected to launch during the first half of the year.
