New Zealand cricket fans will have a new way of measuring the performances of players in domestic cricket competitions with the launch today of a new player ranking system for the 2008/09 season.

The Most Valuable Player (MVP) system was originally developed by the Professional Cricketers’ Association (PCA) in England, and will be promoted in New Zealand by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) in association with New Zealand Cricket (NZC). It is the newest benchmark in the game, for the first time allowing all aspects of a player’s game to be combined and giving him a ranking in relation to his peers.

New content for Age of Conan

Sony Patents New Game Controller

Rumors of a new Sony PlayStation 3 controller have be circling for awhile now. This week, the new controller is one step closer to seeing the light of day with Sony registering a patent for a "new, break-apart controller with advanced motion-sensing technology." Most suprising of all is that the rumored design looks nothing like the PS3's current Sixaxis controller. The new controller design consists of two Wii-like remotes with large glowing spheres at the end, which can be used separately or connected in a variety of configurations. The PlayStation Eye camera will be able to determine the controllers' positions in three-dimensional space thanks to LEDs and ultrasonic sound emitters within the spheres. Three New FFXI Expansions Coming Next Year

Not to be outdone by Blizzard’s fancy bear giveaways, Square Enix announced three new "scenario expansions" for Final Fantasy XI at the recent VanaFest event in Japan. The new expansions -- each estimated to cost around $10 -- will not add any new territory, but rather "deepen the storylines running through pre-existing areas by ushering in all-new plots and intrigues," according to the press release. Wayland, a New X Server For Linux

One of Red Hat's engineers has started writing a new X11 server around today's needs and to eliminate the cruft that has been in this critical piece of free software for more than a decade. This new server is called Wayland and it is designed with newer hardware features like kernel mode-setting and a kernel memory manager for graphics. Wayland is also dramatically simpler to target for in development. A compositing manager is embedded into the Wayland server and ensures 'every frame is perfect' according to the project's leader."
