Rumors of a new Sony PlayStation 3 controller have be circling for awhile now. This week, the new controller is one step closer to seeing the light of day with Sony registering a patent for a "new, break-apart controller with advanced motion-sensing technology." Most suprising of all is that the rumored design looks nothing like the PS3's current Sixaxis controller. The new controller design consists of two Wii-like remotes with large glowing spheres at the end, which can be used separately or connected in a variety of configurations. The PlayStation Eye camera will be able to determine the controllers' positions in three-dimensional space thanks to LEDs and ultrasonic sound emitters within the spheres. Gaming companies often come up with bizarre patents that never come to light, so only time will tell if this new controller actually gets

SCRAWL: "A new update to the official Japanese White Knight Chronicles website shows us a brand new area in the game as well as a new character. The new area is rather woodsy, it seems, as we see nothing but log-ccabins, wood, and grass. The new character, who's name we do not know in English, has a Knight just as the main character does, and it's pretty freakin' bad-ass too."

raque writes "Appleinsider is reporting that the new MacBooks/MacBookPros have built-in copy protection. Quote: 'Apple's new MacBook lines include a form of digital copy protection that will prevent protected media, such as DRM-infused iTunes movies, from playing back on devices that aren't compliant with the new priority protection measures.' Ars Technica is also reporting on the issue. Is this the deal they had to make to get NBC back? Is this a deal breaker for Apple or will fans just ignore it to get their hands on the pretty new machines? Is this a new opportunity for Linux? And what happened to Jobs not liking DRM?"

Recently Google added Street View content for major cities in Italy and France their mapping and geography products. Both Google Earth and Google Maps have this new content. I recently spent some time with our 5th grade students exploring this new content and the ability to view cities such as Rome and Paris in this detail provides another tremendous tool for teachers when studying geography and social studies. Also in addition to the new Street View content Google also recently announced a new Ancient Rome layer to Google Earth. This new layer was produced by the University of Virginia's Institute for Advanced Technology in the Humanities, and contains over 6,700 3 dimensional building and 250 Google Earth placemarks. The ability to have students visually see the scale and structure of these buildings, while at the same time being able t

Barence writes "Microsoft has released the first pre-beta code of Windows 7, and PC Pro has a series of in-depth, hands-on examinations of all the new features. The revamped user interface has clearly gleaned more than a little inspiration from the Mac OS X Dock, but it goes further than the Apple concept with 'jumplists,' new gadgets and an updated system tray. The much-vaunted multi-touch controls were there to play with, and it seemed to work well. Networking has been given the full treatment, with new features HomeGroup and Libraries. Windows 7 debuts a new feature called Device Stage that has the potential to be unbelievably handy ... or a complete disaster. Finally, several new features could make PCs easier to manage and secure for IT departments, such as BitLocker To Go and Branch Cache.

Submillimeter astronomy used to be known as the last unexplored wavelength frontier. But this new image from the Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) telescope reveals the awesome power of submillimetre-wavelength astronomy, and shows another new frontier: a birthplace of new stars. An expanding bubble of ionized gas about ten light-years across is causing the surrounding material to collapse into dense clumps, creating new stars. Submillimetre light is the key to revealing some of the coldest material in the Universe, such as these cold, dense clouds.
