What might come as a surprise for many people is not that Netflix will cease selling used DVDs, but that Netflix was actually selling used DVDs in the first place. Selling "previously viewed DVDs" (as Netflix calls them--sort of like how used car salesmen sell "previously-owned vehicles"), has been part of the services that Netflix has offered for sometime, with some discs selling for as little as $5.99. But after November 30, Netflix will no longer offer this service, so that it can focus on its "core business" of "delivering great movie rentals to you on DVD by mail and instantly to the computer and TV" as the company recently reported on its blog.

CNet is reporting that Netflix has opened up its "Watch Instantly" feature to Mac users (here is Netflix's blog entry). They accomplished this by using Microsoft's Silverlight technology on both platforms, abandoning the Windows Media Player solution that had been employed in the first, Windows-only, version. Silverlight's DRM capabilities meet Netflix's needs, apparently. Netflix warns that this is beta software. Mac users can opt in here, then watch instantly with Safari or Firefox 2+, with the Silverlight plugin in place. Movie selection is somewhat limited.

Sweet! It looks like HD video content is very much going to be a reality from Netflix; and the Xbox 360 is going to be the first to bring it to users. According to Engadget, who’ve just published a hands-on impression article on the New Xbox Experience (NXE), state that the “quality was stunning.” Darren Murph at Engadget followed up on this new feature and discovered that HD Netflix Streaming is currently in a “soft launch” with about 300 titles available for viewing. Interestingly, neither Netflix’s Watch Instantly for PC, Netflix Playber by Roku, LG BD300 or Samsung P2500/P2550 Blu-ray players will be able to access or play any of the new HD content — at least for now.

Netflix recently informed its subscribers that, starting on December 15th, it would stop shipping movies on the HD DVD high-definition format. This is the final move in the company's backing of the winning HD format, Blu-ray, after Netflix announced back in February that it would stop purchasing movies recorded on the HD DVD format. In the letter to its subscribers, Netflix told them any current HD DVD title will be substituted with the same movie on standard DVD as of December 15th, making the transition seamless and not requiring them to take any actions.

Netflix is calling this a "soft launch" since it is only rolling out such a small number of videos for HD streaming. The move mostly serves to stake a claim in the HD streaming market as opposed to being a full offering. Contrary to what others are reporting, HD streaming will be available on all streaming devices when it premieres with the New Xbox Experience. That means that the Roku, LG, and Samsung boxes will all be able to stream these HD movies, in addition to the Xbox 360. The PC and Mac based versions of Netflix, will not, however, be able to stream HD immediately. In addition, streaming in HD will require a large amount of bandwidth. Netflix estimates the requirement being in the 8-10 Mbps range.

One of the most important attributes of my job, as I mentioned a month ago, is to strive to maintain an open and flexible mind. With respect to the ongoing 'hot' topic of Internet- versus physical media-distributed video content, that job requirement means regularly testing content sources, delivery mechanisms and playback platforms. And specifically with respect to Netflix's Watch Instantly (aka Watch Now) service, that job requirement means that on the heels of testing Roku's Netflix Player and MediaMall Technologies' PlayOn, I've spent the past week-plus trying out Microsoft's Netflix playback client for the Xbox 360. Tough job, I know ;-)

Techzonez Netflix is exiting the previously-viewed DVD market. In a blog post yesterday, the company said it would stop selling DVDs to its members as of November 30 to focus on DVD rentals and streaming video. "Our core business is delivering great movie rentals to you on DVD by mail and instantly to the computer and TV," a Netflix representative says in the post. When Microsoft releases the updated Xbox 360 dashboard on November 19th one of the features available will be high definition streaming of video from Netflix. You'll have to be an Xbox Live Gold member to take advantage of the HD content (which will be limited, at least initially), but the potential is certainly there to turn the Xbox 360 into a stronger all round media platform because of it. According to engadget, the quality is impressive enough (they also give a low down on the other features coming with the new dashboard). One lingering question with this introduction is when (or if) current Netflix streamers will get the HD treatment.

In what's a slightly suspicious coincidence, but Sony's suddenly pulled a bunch of its movies from the Xbox's Netflix Watch Instantly streaming service just a few hours before Microsoft's New Xbox Experience goes live. Netflix VP Steve Swasey says there's no foul play involved, and that the NXE Instant Queue had just run into a licensing issue with Columbia Pictures. [Joystiq via Engadget]
