CWmike writes "Few tears were shed when alleged spam and malware purveyor McColo was suddenly taken offline last Tuesday by its upstream service providers. But behind the scenes of the McColo case and another recent takedown of Intercage, a ferocious struggle is taking place between the purveyors of Web-based malware and loosely aligned but highly committed groups of security researchers who are out to neutralize them. Backers claim that the effort to shut down miscreant ISPs is needed because of the inability of law enforcement agencies to deal with a problem that is global in nature. But some question whether there is a hint of vigilantism behind the takedowns — even as they acknowledge that there may not be any other viable options for dealing with the problem at this point.

Citizens in the neighborhood of SpaceX's McGregor Test Facility in Texas have hopefully calmed down by now, following the panic stirred Saturday night. They must have been assured that no war, Sun explosion or alien invasion was in place at the time, as some appear to have believed. In fact, the reaction was caused by the successful test of the full mission-length firing of the company's Falcon 9 launch vehicle.

Prosecutors have presented a compelling narrative of neighborhood discord and death in the town of Dardenne Prairie, Mo. Lori Drew's lawyer, Dean Steward, argued in vain that once jurors hear the story, they will not see it as a case about violating rules in cyberspace, but that rather that it is simply the tragic death of a young girl.

If there's something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters -- and Atari. After an uncertain future following the Activision-Blizzard merger, the fate of many Sierra titles was unknown. Some were banished to the cancellation void, but others, such as Ghostbusters: The Video Game, were saved from an eternity in the Ecto-Containment Unit. At a recent Atari press event, developer Terminal Reality was eager to look toward the game's anticipated release in 2009, but not before they underwent a cleansing process via discussing the storied history of how they resurrected everyone's favorite band of ghost-busting brothers.

Yesterday I headed down to the uber-hip Echo Park neighborhood here in Los Angeles to hang out on the set of a new TheWB.com series called "Rockville, CA." It's a web only series created and executive produced by Josh Schwartz, the man behind "'Gossip Girl," "Chuck," and the late "OC" The show is a drama that centers on a group of LA hipsters who work at the fictional Rockville club and will feature performances from some very cool indie bands. It's not set to air until March though, so I'll tell you more about that project in a few months.
