Shop around before choosing a mortgage lender, but don't stop there. When you receive your good faith estimate of closing costs, or GFE, the negotiation hasn't ended.

SGI Relicenses OpenGL: "A Huge Gift to the Free Software Community"

"Today, however, the FSF has announced that the licenses in question, the SGI Free License B and the GLX Public License, have been rewritten after months of negotiation between the FSF and SGI. The problem is now resolved, and the result is a code contribution that the FSF ranks as one of the greatest given to the community by a proprietary company."

Using search data to drive annual budget planning

For some people, autumn conjures up thoughts of pumpkins, fall foliage and tweed suits. For marketers, it signals a 2-3 month stretch of excel spreadsheets, vendor reviews and endless negotiation. Yes, we are in the thick of planning season, and this year an uncertain economy will leave its mark on all line-items, search included. And even though search spending is likely to remain flat, the clever search marketer will present a refined strategy based on changing consumer tastes, as evidenced by recent search data and offline indicators.

Giving Caches a Chance

Though it tends to get treated poorly, HTTP isn't a dumb file-transfer protocol. The RIAA's Playbook: No New Business Models Without RIAA Ownership

Mathew Ingram covers the details of Muxtape's run-in with the RIAA. As you may recall, last month the rather useful site that let people create online "mix tapes" that could be streamed to others was shut down thanks to the RIAA. The site's founder has now admitted that he tried negotiating with the RIAA, but that it was nearly impossible. The RIAA's representatives started the "negotiation" by saying they were about to shut the site down, and then complained to Amazon (whose S3 service hosted the files) to get access to the files blocked. Now, that concerns me for a few reasons. I had created a Muxtape when it first launched, but it had no RIAA label music on it. So, why would Amazon block access to it?
