techmuse writes "Viewing the 2008 Olympics opening ceremony online at NBC's Olympics website, you can see that the order in which the countries were presented was very different from the actual order of the countries in the ceremony, as listed at Wikipedia. NBC skipped roughly 100 countries ahead, then jumped back and forth, apparently delaying the appearance of the United States in its home market until later in the broadcast. (In fact, the US team was shown on the infield before they were shown marching!) NBC did not acknowledge this in its broadcast. Is NBC altering the reality of the broadcast to boost ratings? Was this true only online, or also in the live broadcast?"

Ben: The blogs already are slamming NBC for not covering the controversial aspects of the Olympics, such as the protests, the pollution, the dissident angle, etc. Can't say that it's true because this viewer hasn't surveyed enough of their coverage... but one blog I just read really gives it to NBC. This might be a good angle for you to cover... also, by posting this, perhaps we are helping NBC News avoid bad publicity by encouraging them to report objectively and fearlessly, even though they are beholden to the Chinese government as the network of record. Could you ask Capus about this?

D avid Letterman , the CBS host who has competed with Jay Leno every weeknight for 15 years, now feels empathy for his late-night challenger. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Letterman, the longtime "Late Show" host, expresses bewilderment about NBC's decision, announced four years ago, to replace Leno next year with Conan O'Brien , the current host of "Late Night." "Unless I'm misunderstanding something, I don't know why, after the job Jay has done for them, why they would relinquish that," Letterman said in the interview. "I guess they thought it was a less messy way to handle what happened to me at NBC. I don't know." Letterman famously moved from NBC to CBS in 1993 after Leno replaced Johnny Carson on NBC's "Tonight" show, establishing one of the foremost rivalries on television.

nbcDuring his keynote speech of September 9, 2008, Steve Jobs told his audience that NBC television shows, which include the popular Battlestar Galactica and The Office, will once again return to the iTunes store. This completed the circle of drama that NBC spun in August 2007, when the broadcasting company pulled their content from iTunes (effective December 2007) over a pricing dispute.

NBC may be taking lumps in the blogosphere for its decision to provide so much of its Olympics coverage exclusively through traditional channels, but they have given advertisers an increasingly elusive commodity — a large, captivated (and captive) audience.

Have you heard of "net pollution"? If not, you soon will, because it's a term being pushed by Arts+Labs, the new group backed by AT&T, Viacom, NBC Universal, Cisco, and Microsoft. Arts+Labs wants to be a sort of Internet plumber, using its Roto-rooter to clear all that caked-on nastiness from the tubes, allowing nice, clean—and most importantly, "safe"—content to flow. And, what's more, the biggest beneficiaries of the group's effort will be consumers; the press release even says so.

AT&T, Microsoft, Cisco, Viacom, and NBC Universal have joined forces to create a new lobbying coalition named "Arts & Labs," tasked with taking aim at piracy. The group is co-chaired by Mark McKinnon, former media advisor to the Bush and McCain campaigns, and Mike McCurry, who until last week was Chairman for the telecom-industry funded anti-net-neutrality group "Hands Off The Internet." One of the smaller, but still significant announcements yesterday was that NBC was coming back to iTunes and that they'd be one of the channels offering TV shows in high-def—for $2.99. Buried in that, even, is that they'll sell a bunch of older shows for just 99 cents an ep, and offer discounts to Season Pass buyers. Cnet says that "What this means for consumers, however, is that Apple is slowly losing control over pricing of video content at iTunes." Uh, what?
