Orochimaru's rascally underlings have absconded with Sasuke, attempting to ferry him off to the Sound Village with Naruto and a team of crack Genin recruits hot on their tail. As Shikamaru, Kiba, and Rock Lee occupy Orochimaru's errand boys, Naruto trails after Sasuke, newly hatched from Orochimaru's superpower-granting coffin. While his comrades end their desperate battles with a little help from an unexpected quarter, Naruto tries to convince an obstinate Sasuke to return to his home village. Sasuke replies by wasting entire episodes exploring his dark, dank past before trying quite earnestly to kill Naruto off.

Sometimes brilliant but oftentimes maddening, Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm (based on the wildly popular Naruto anime series) is a game of conflicting ideas that leverages its only key strength: its visuals. Gorgeous character animations, carefully constructed cut-scenes, and consummately directed choreography give Ninja Storm plenty of style -- but what about substance? Fancy graphics can provide immediate enjoyment, but without meaningful game design, the flashiness isn't sustainable.

Naruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm hits the PS3 next week. The game features two main game modes for players to enjoy – "Free Battle Mode" and "Ultimate Mission Mode." In Free Battle Mode, you can play as one of 25 characters from the animated series. The battles aren't strictly one-on-one either - you can bring two support characters into every battle, who will help you out in short bursts. This is the same three person team structure as the TV series, but now you can create your own teams with all sorts of original combinations. A lot of effort has been put into the battles to make sure they match the look and feel of the animated series. You can perform all sorts of amazing moves with your favorite characters and even fight on walls and run over bodies of water.
