VIA Introduces the Nano Processor

Vigile writes "While the VIA Isaiah architecture had been previously discussed, the new x86 processor is officially being released as the VIA Nano. The Nano marks VIA's first 64-bit, superscalar, speculative out-of-order CPU design and is being built on Fujitsu's 65nm process technology. While direct performance comparisons are still missing, the products being released could bring Intel's Atom platform to its knees: clock speeds as high as 1.8 GHz or as low as 1.0 GHz with a maximum power draw of only 5 watts! VIA's recently announced mini-note OpenBook platform is a likely candidate for the Nano the processors but they will likely find their way into mainstream desktop and notebook computers as well." Reader MojoKid contributes a link to HotHardware's story on the chip now known as the Nano , as well as a January interview with VIA's Ce

Technology Award Recognizes Contributions to Nano Research

FEI Co., Portland, Oreg., received a technology award at Nano Tech 2008 in Tokyo, Japan, for technical excellence in evaluation and measurement of its Titan 80-300 S/TEM (scanning/transmission electron microscope). The award recognizes both innovative technology and the contributions the Titan S/TEM has enabled in nanotechnology research. Professor Tomoji Kawai, chairman, Nano Tech Executive Committee, noted that FEI has been a major contributor to the science of nanotechnology since its inception. The introduction of aberration-corrected TEM is a major breakthrough that gives scientists the ability to directly visualize nanostructures with sub-Angstrom imaging resolution. A new model with high resolution EELS (electron energy loss spectroscopy) that can provide analytical results with the same high resolution has also been put into pract

Creative ships TravelSound iPod nano speaker to US

Peripheral maker Creative Labs has introduced a new speaker setup for iPods, the TravelSound for iPod nano. As opposed to most such speaker systems, which rely on separate, desktop-sized satellites, the TravelSound meshes two channels into a single body, in which the Nano docks flush. The speaker is also designed to be tiny enough to be handheld, or carried in pockets, purses or luggage. Each channel produces 700mW of RMS power, with a frequency response of 180Hz to 20KHz.

DNA sequencing and nano-fabrication receive equipment funding support

Development and commercialization of new technologies in the fields of DNA sequencing and nano-fabrication is receiving a boost from Western Economic Diversification Canada, which is providing $750,000 toward the purchase of state-of-the-art equipment and the building of a fabrication facility for nanotechnology and genetic research. Genome British Columbia will purchase and install advanced genomic research equipment for use at two sites. The BC Cancer Agency's Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre will house next generation DNA sequencing equipment, which will greatly increase the speed and accuracy of sequencing, as well as decrease the costs involved in such activities. The Networks of Centres of Excellence at UBC will house a newly built nano-fabrication clean room, along with equipment for prototyping and manufacturing microfluidic b
