The myth of Sir Donald Bradman is still potent enough to persuade an Australian publisher to bankroll an updated version of Bradman in Wisden to celebrate the 100th anniversary of his birth. The myth is of an infallible cricketer who survived a dark imperial plot to destabilise him (Bodyline), and then led a team of Invincibles whose brilliant exploits helped to forge a national identity. Graeme Wright, the editor of the collection, argues that the myth is redundant. "[It] no longer applies in an Australia able to assert its own identity as a nation," he writes. But it is taking an unconscionable time dying.

Defenders of the patent system quite frequently point out that one of the main benefits (some claim the only benefit) of the patent system is "disclosure." That is, because the patent system requires you to disclose your patent, the patent system is quite helpful in spreading ideas. This is a myth that's easily debunked on a few points. First, it only really makes sense to get patent protection if you know the idea will get disclosed or figured out anyway. In those cases, the disclosure via the patent system is meaningless, since the info would have gotten out anyway. Second, these days, thanks to "willful infringement" tripling the damages you pay, many corporations tell employees not to look at relevant patents, as it only opens up more liability.

Several readers pointed out a ComputerWorld UK blog piece on the expanding ripples of the Vista fiasco. Glyn Moody quotes an earlier Inquirer piece about Vista, which he notes "has been memorably described as DRM masquerading as an operating system": "Studies carried out by both Gartner and IDC have found that because older software is often incompatible with Vista, many consumers are opting for used computers with XP installed as a default, rather than buying an expensive new PC with Vista and downgrading. Big business, which typically thinks nothing about splashing out for newer, more up-to-date PCs, is also having trouble with Vista, with even firms like Intel noting XP would remain the dominant OS within the company for the foreseeable future.

Myth and misunderstanding is leading to digital mayhem in the industry, whereby agencies are being accused by digital behemoth Google of committing fraud or, at the very least, irresponsible accounting with their clients cash online. As a result, Google announced today, Friday, 14 November 2008, that it would be 'Google certifying' five key agencies leading this space in 2009.

This narrative poem of chivalry, Arthurian myth and romance ought to cut a considerable dash on the stage, particularly when the version of the text involved is Simon Armitage's sinewy, witty translation of the original northeastern-inflected Middle English. But the adapter/director Daniel Buckroyd's touring production for New Perspectives fights shy of the work's darkest and most intriguing aspects and feels awkwardly unsure of its audience. No potentially thrilling moment has the faintest shiver of danger; no instance of romance or eroticism is allowed to pass without a snigger.

Billy the Kid still rides through the Old West of the American imagination: part reality, part myth; part outlaw and part instrument of justice; part hero and part homicidal maniac. John Vernon's fictionalized account of Billy the Kid's life starts with the only known photograph of the man, probably taken around 1880, when Henry McCarty (his birth name) would have been around 20, and a year before he was killed by Sheriff Pat Garrett. Vernon describes the man in the picture as "draggle-tailed." With his buck teeth and heavy-lidded eyes he looks, to me, undernourished, detached and slightly deranged, as if only dimly aware of where he is and what he's doing.
