Los Angeles-based MySpace said Thursday morning that it has launched a new initiative to allow Yahoo, eBay, Photobucket, and Twitter to pull public profile data into their websites. MySpace said its "Data Availability" effort will allow users to dynamically share their public profile information with other sites. MySpace will allow users to control what information they share with who, including basic profile information, photos, videos, and friends. The initial links will show up in Yahoo's Instant Messenger application, eBay's profiles, MySpace's own Photobucket subsidiary, and also to provide better profile information to the popular Twitter instant messaging application.

MySpace won the largest CAN-SPAM judgment in US history this week when the defendants failed to show up in court. The US District Court for the Central District of California made a default judgment against Sanford Wallace and Walter Rines for using MySpace to send more than 700,000 spam messages to users of the popular social networking service. The result is $234 million in damages for MySpace—assuming, of course, that Wallace and Rines can be tracked down and forced to pay up.

Ian Lamont writes "MySpace is preparing to boost its advertising systems, by launching a targeted ad platform called HyperTargeting and creating a Web-based system that lets vendors purchase ads without dealing with human sales teams. HyperTargeting will 'look at a person's interests listed on their public profile and then classify the user into particular interest-specific categories.' MySpace claims that early tests resulted in a 300 percent increase in the number of ad click-throughs. The company apparently learned a lot from Facebook's earlier experiences with Beacon — MySpace members will be able to opt out of HyperTargeting, according to the company."

Google's open-source development tool is seeing adoption grow.SAN FRANCISCO—One of Google's primary goals is to advance the capabilities of the browser and the company has done so with its Gears offline-application-enabling technology. Advancing the browser also means adoption by key players. At the Google I/O conference here May 28, Allen Hurff, vice president of engineering at social networking player MySpace, said MySpace is using Gears to make its site and products easier to use. "It gives you full text capability and a SQL database on the client machine" for local storage, Hurff said. "Today, MySpace is launching enhanced functionality for MySpace mail using Gears," Chris Prince, a Google software engineer, said in a May 28 blog post. "They are using the original Gears Database API with Full Text Search to enable fast and easy search

longacre writes "The Associated Press is reporting an indictment has been handed down in the sad case of Megan Meier, the girl who committed suicide after receiving upsetting MySpace messages from someone she perceived to be her boyfriend. It was later determined the boy, Josh Evans, was a fictitious identity created by a neighbor of Meier's family. Lori Drew, of a St. Louis suburb, has been charged with 'one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to get information used to inflict emotional distress on the girl.' Interestingly, despite the alleged crime having occurred strictly in Missouri, the case was investigated by the FBI's St. Louis and Los Angeles field offices, and the trial will be held in Los Angeles, home of MySpace's servers.
