Hacking My Own Accounts

Some of you may have noticed I’ve been silent for a week. My computer was in for repairs (a stuck CD drive, boo), Apple reposessed it and was dragging its feet in the tech support arena. Meanwhile, I discovered that I hadn’t written down my login and password for Wordpress anywhere so I couldn’t get in to blog! This was total negligence on my part and I apologize for my silence. But all’s well again, I can play my music CD’s and I’ve returned to the blogosphere, with my lesson intact: keep adequate documentation of all your login info.

How Can I Use My Shopping Cart To Beef Up My Online Sales

Two years ago, I decided to take on the venture of selling rare books online. My vision was to have people logging on and buying my books by the dozen. Sadly, my vision was replaced by the realization that it was not as easy as I anticipated. In trying to increase my sales, I learned several things along the way.

Blog Roll

If there's anything I know how to do, it's procrastinate. Just ask my friends --I'll put off important papers until the night before they're due, and I'll come up with the most inane excuses to put off doing something (I don't remember when "I have to do my nails" has ever qualified as a legitimate exemption). But, my most-favored procrastination tool --reading blogs --has turned out to be quite worthwhile. I decided to start my own blog my freshman year of college (Pretty Legit) where I began to practice writing and familiarizing myself with the world of online media. It was hard at times --learning enough html to customize my site was sometimes frustrating, and getting proficient at Photoshop took weeks and weeks of work --but the experience in general has given me so much (and probably had a hand in getting me this internship).

Long-Range Wireless Keyboard/Mouse?

tambo writes with the sort of problem more people wish they had: "I've just bought myself an excellent LCD TV. I'd love to be able to access my home server from it for many reasons (music, video, surfing, MAME, etc.) — but my home server is in another room, 30 feet away from the TV and 50 feet away from the couch. I've acquired some gear to send PC audio and video wirelessly (over the 5.8GHz range), so that's all good. My challenge now is trying to send input wirelessly to my PC from fifty feet away. I've thought about getting a wireless USB hub, but that would introduce an additional wireless hop that would probably add to the input latency (and might interfere with all the other wireless gear in my pad.) My best bet now is to get a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse that have an unusually good range, and some of the Logitechs seem to qualif

My iPod screws up my playlists!

After my last video didn't have the proof that it leaks my playlists and "Music" together, here it is:

What Is the Best Way To Disinfect Your Laptop?

akutz writes "I've had the flu since Tuesday afternoon. My wife picked me up from work with a temperature of 103.6 and it finally broke at 98.7 around 3am this morning. Yay. The problem is that I used my laptop during my periods of feverish deliriousness, contaminating my shiny 15" MacBook Pro with the icky influenza virus. I am asking my fellow Slashdotters if they have ever sought out a good way of disinfecting their lucky laptops after an illness. Do you use soap? A light acid bath? Just get the family dog to lick it until it looks clean?"

How To Spot E-Vote Tampering?

Precinct Election Judge writes "I am one of the Republican Party Precinct Chairs in Harris County, Texas. Since in 2006 Republican Rick Perry won the Governor's race in my precinct I will be the head election judge at my polling station this November. (My Democratic counterpart will be assistant election judge.) I have read with interest the stories about voting machine hacking, and I want advice from those of you who are experts on what to watch for to make sure there is no fraudulant activity at my precinct during the election. What activities should I look for? Keep in mind my restrictions" I will be at a table in the front of the room with the voter rolls signing people in, I can only approach the voting machines if a voter asks a question or if I have strong reason to believe there is fraudulant activity, the last thing I need is for

add wow to your water

There are two things I'm kind of bad at: drinking water and taking my vitamins. I know that both are very important because they give you energy and make you look and feel healthy, but I still have a hard time consuming them on a regular basis. That's where 4C Totally Light 2Go Vitamin Stix come in. I have to admit I was skeptical about these little packets of powder. Maybe they'd taste chalky or artificial or too fruity or not fruity enough. Turns out, they made my water taste delicious, and they are chock full of Vitamin A, B, and C as well as zinc and other antioxidants to keep me energized and keep my immune system strong. I think the best part is that they are calorie-free and sugar-free, so I am not tacking on liquid calories to my daily intake (I prefer to chew my calories because food rocks).

Retrieving Data From Old Amstrad Floppies?

Jeppe Utzon writes "Back in 1987, when I was a teenager in high school still, I spent most evenings, nights and weekends writing small programs in BASIC on my Amstrad CPC 6128. Some of these programs were simple games, some drew graphics, some could help me with math or train me in French — and most were utterly pointless. But I never had as much satisfying fun as when writing those programs — even if no one in my family understood any of it when I proudly displayed the fruits of three sleepless nights of labor. Now, 20 years later, I still have a sealed pack of about 15 disks with all my work on them (along with a few of my favorite games) and I was wondering if it was possible to get the data out somehow so that I could run it in emulation on my Mac.

Criticism = racism? A post on my previous post

Fouad Asfour, one of the contributing editors to Documenta magazine, and Sharlene Khan, a local artist about whose work I expressed my reservations very briefly in my last post, have launched accusations that I am racist for having ciriticised Khan’s work and that I am ignorantly “lauding” my own “white saviour” humanitarian efforts, using the suffering of those who have been displaced or hurt in the recent xenophobic attacks as an excuse to promote myself.

BOCA RATON, Fla., PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- NuState Energy Holdings, Inc. , and Rentar Environmental Solutions, Inc. MY DRIVER SEAT is a potent fleet management tool which gathers data in real time and provides timely, concise reports that present a precise picture of speed, miles per gallon, idling time, out of route, unauthorized usage, and a great deal of other valuable information.

Identity theft probably an inside job

My personal information was used to open a joint bank account without my knowledge. My signature was forged on at least one sizable check and mailed to this bank. The forged check cleared without my knowledge. The bank is FDIC-insured.

Console Game Fans Fire Back

In my last column, "Online Games Redefine Gaming," I said the Internet is eclipsing the console as the platform of choice for gaming. This topic wasn't easy to write given my personal connection to consoles. Not surprisingly, I received an overwhelming amount of feedback both for and against my opinion. Many readers agreed completely. Many others virtually kicked my teeth in.

Painting has remarkable story

Q: In the early 1970s my family was living in the United States. One summer my father decided my brother needed a renewal of his Canadian heritage so he took him on a canoe trip down the English River. On the way home during a stop in Toronto my father saw this painting hanging in a bank, where it had been placed through a local gallery.

Math says man shouldn't prepay mortgage

I'm 55 years old. My credit card balances should be paid off by the end of this year. Should I use the money -- about $1,000 a month -- that I had budgeted to pay down my credit cards to instead start paying down my second mortgage or to increase my 401(k) plan contributions? The second mortgage is at 6.7 percent with a balance of $30,000 and 10 years remaining on the loan.

Why Im here

Basically it comes down to this. My children and friends said I was driving them crazy when I had a running conversation - loudly I might add - with my TV set. I too was dissatisfied when my set did not respond. I knew there was a better way to go about this. This being sharing my thoughts about Chris Matthews, and his panel of experts and their cohorts around the dial.

Blog Promotion Techniques I Would Like to Implement

If I have the time to promote my web blog, there are a few things that I would like to implement so that my site is not languishing in the dust, lost and forgotten and has never seen the light of day :-) But alas! Time is not something I have in my hand for my personal site as there are too many things I have to do, like working for 5 clients at the same time - which is in itself a feat already to make.

The Future of SEO

I'm back in the U.K. this week to see if my wife still remembers me and to speak at the London eMetrics Marketing Optimization Summit. My presentation takes a closer look at balancing organic and paid search -- and the impact they can have on each other. I'm also putting my thoughts together on the next five years in search for colleague who's preparing a document. And I'm in the process of researching and writing my new book.

I owe $150 to cancel cell service that doesnt work

Question: I signed a two-year contract with Sprint for my cell phone. A year and a half later, I moved to a new home a few miles away in the same city. I can’t seem to get a signal inside my house, which is a problem since I don’t have a landline. Sprint told me to upgrade the software on my phone, but that didn’t help. So I switched to Verizon - and now get perfect service in my home. But am I stuck with Sprint’s $150 cancellation fee? - Dan B. Lindeman III, Fort Thomas, Ky.

Twenty20: The Page 3 of Cricket

The Indian Premier League has rammed home a new meaning to the notion of a 'generation gap'. Taking my 13-year-old son to watch the Delhi Daredevils playing their first game at the Kotla was meant to be an exercise in family bonding and, also, a chance to get my teenager to savour the joys of the sport. Sitting in one of the spiffy new corporate boxes, we had the added pleasure of legendary Australian fast bowler Dennis Lillee for company. As Lillee poured his wisdom on the game, I could sense my son getting restless. "I want to be on television dad, like all my friends, with a placard cheering a sixer. Whats the point in coming to the game if you don't come on TV!" was his candid confession.

Minireview: iFrogz iPod touch Wrapz

I'm a little late to the game, but I finally picked up an iPod touch. I went for the 16GB model despite my trepidation that the device will be upgraded soon, leaving me with old and busted technology. For those of you that haven't had the opportunity to play with one, the iPod touch is beautiful. The size, the feel in my hands, the design: everything. Soon after my purchase, like any over retentive geek, I immediately felt the need to protect my new gadget from all harm, covering it up to preserve its beauty.
