Copyright ruling for Canadian musicians

Canadian musicians won the right yesterday to collect royalties from companies that use their music on the Internet. The ruling by the Copyright Board of Canada follows a decision last October to allow artists to collect a royalty on music sold from online music stores like iTunes. "This decision will provide a foundation for the management of performing rights royalties for online music use," said Paul Spurgeon, general counsel for the group representing artists. The decision is retroactive, covering the years between 1996 and 2006. The royalties will be a percentage of the revenue that radio and television stations, video game companies and satellite radio services collect from their Internet operations. Mr. Spurgeon represents the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada.

COMPARISONS between taxpayer funding for elite musicians and for future sporting stars miss one important point—longevity ("Academy’s sporting chance”, 1-2/11). Elite musicians have a working life that may well continue into their 80s.

A Robot Plays ?Flight of the Bumblebee?

A new version of a musical robot that plays the flute perfectly could soon turn out to be a worthy competitor to human musicians. Besides the fact that it makes no mistakes, the latest technology allowed its developers from the Waseda University in Japan to equip it with cameras that act as eyes, ensuring a dynamic contact and interaction with its public, just the way regular musicians do when they're on stage during concerts.

Once More, With Feeling: Copyright Is Not A Welfare System For Musicians

The purpose of copyright is clear: it's to provide an incentive for the creation of new content. As such, it makes absolutely no sense to ever retroactively extend any sort of copyright. The government, backed by citizens, made a deal with content creators: you create content and we give you a monopoly for x number of years -- and clearly that deal was considered fair by the content creators, or they wouldn't have agreed to it and created the content. To go back and change the terms of the deal at a later date is unfair to everyone. It's renegotiating a deal against citizens' best interests. It's as if you bought a car for a price you negotiated, and three years later, the car company comes back to you and says that you need to pay more, because they, alone, decided that they didn't make enough off of you.
