Municipal Art Society releases Coney plan

The Municipal Art Society of New York, a non-profit urban planning, design and preservation group, released its proposal for Coney Island today. The plan calls for Coney Island to feature indoor and outdoor event and performance space starting in summer 2009, including a renovated, 2,300-seat Shore Theater, combining a vaudeville theater and a circus. The proposal includes a cable-car ride that would connect Coney Island's attractions. Events and programs could include a Halloween parade, video game competitions, an international music festival and international graffiti contests. The society will provide more details about funding at the end of the year. The city is planning a 9-acre entertainment area in Coney Island and is in negotiations to buy 10.

Municipal Arts Society says Coney plans will focus on entertainment

The Municipal Arts Society said its new planning initiative for Coney Island is not an effort to compete with the city's plan, but rather is a brainstorming activity for the site's entertainment section. In addition to the design group selected by the society, there will be a Web-based call for ideas and concepts for the entertainment section, which has been scaled down to nine acres from the original plan of 18 acres.

Finnish E-Voting System Loses 2% of Votes

kaip writes "Finland piloted a fully electronic voting system in municipal elections last weekend. Due to a usability glitch, 232 votes, or about 2% of all electronic votes were lost. The results of the election may have been affected, because the seats in municipal assemblies are often decided by margins of a few votes. Unfortunately, nobody knows for sure, because the Ministry of Justice didn't see any need to implement a voter-verified paper record. The ministry was, of course, duly warned about a fully electronic voting system, but the critique was debunked as 'science fiction.' There is now discussion about re-arranging the affected elections. Thanks go to the voting system providers, Scytl and TietoEnator, for the experience."
