You can have too much of a good thing. My partner used to get an RSS feed from Tor.com, but when the site kicked into full gear, he canceled the feed. Said he got 34 downloads to his reader in one day. That's no longer interesting/informative -- that's nagging. There seems to be a narrow fence to stand upon. My guess is 10 or less from a site is optimal. I've canceled feeds for anything over a dozen. I'm too busy to be tempted by some much new stuff.

Thinking of camping out at Ikea once they start selling those solar panels? While you're waiting, RoofRay will help you plan exactly how many SUNGLYÄSS units you'll need, and how much you'll save. Draw the shape of a prospective solar array on Google Maps' satellite image of your roof, enter its slope angle, and watch RoofRay calculate how much DC juice your panels will generate. It doesn't take into account exactly what kind of panels you'll be using, so of course it's an estimate, but an interesting tool for getting the general idea of how much you could knock off the electric bill. See it in action in a demo video below.

For an upcoming story on how to make money with a blog, I spoke with several bloggers who were willing to share their own financial successes (and struggles). The bottom line seems to be that while making a side income with a blog is possible, it takes a lot of effort—so much that many people will decide it's not worth pursuing. Here's a snapshot of four different bloggers, all of whom are at different stages:

Twenty milliseconds' latency is too much time? Well, yes, if you are building an automated trading system where the trading is done by software and the job of the trader has become to manage the software itself. That narrow window of execution is the parameter Swedish software developer Tocarema had to meet in creating its ground-up solution for an automated trading environment, as reported by Jeffrey Burt in eWeek.

The best plan for the iPhone is... multiple plan structures, just like You Choose, which allows flexible plan arrangements. That way people like me who call around 5 minutes a month, use 50 TXTs but a good amount of data (at least 1GB) can have reasonable pricing comparable to people who call and TXT a lot but don't use much data.

Microsoft will be more guarded in what it shares with the outside world as its engineers busy themselves working on Windows 7, according to a new Engineering Windows 7 blog created by two senior W7 engineering managers, Jon DeVaan and Steven Sinofsky. The authors say they will post "regularly" but that Microsoft will be "maintaining a little bit more control over the communication around Windows 7." They add: "We ... definitely learned some lessons about 'disclosure' and how we can all too easily get ahead of ourselves in talking about features before our understanding of them is solid." There will be a lot of white space to fill in their blog if they're duty-bound not to say much.

One of my domain names was registered long ago with Network Solutions. Network Solutions charges several times as much per year for registrations as other registrars, so of course I want to transfer away. Hah. But I'm told at times it's the wrong time of year to make the transfer. When I do sign in, I'm sent through many screens of upsells and confusing UIs when I try to do anything. I thought I got it right this time, but the transfer failed, perhaps because a confirmation email got caught in a spam filter. Basically, Network Solutions combines the arrogance of the monopolist it once was with the hustle of a desperate upselling cheap suit salesman.

After apparently much criticism for its low data plans on the new iPhone, which only resulted only after much protest, the Canadian carrier Rogers has decided to drop data charges for other devices as well. If you're a Canadian user of a HTC TyTn, Palm Treo, Nokia N95, Samsung BlackJack or Motorola Q9h act quickly to cash in on the company's offer of $30 plans for 6GB of wireless data transfer/month. Rogers says this is a limited time offer.
