S&P Picks and Pans: Yahoo, eBay, Ford, Johnson & Johnson, Alkermes

An unconfirmed report in The Times of London states that YHOO is in talks to sell its search business to Microsoft (MSFT; 20.22) for some $20 billion. We think that even though such a transaction would make sense for both companies, the indicated 24% premium to YHOO's entire market capitalization seems excessive and unlikely, especially given MSFT's enviable bargaining position. Nonetheless, despite considerable challenges, we view YHOO as attractively valued and we believe a MSFT search-focused agreement of some sort could be a material positive catalyst. -S. Kessler

Microsoft Makes Security Software Free, Symantec and McAfee Screwed (MSFT, SYMC, MFE)

Microsoft (MSFT) is offering aggressive pricing on its latest anti-malware product: free. Coming next year, Microsoft will offer "Morro" for free general download, with the current anti-malware add-on "Windows Live OneCare" (still on sale for $50 at the Microsoft Store) being slowly phased out.

Microsoft: We Promise Not To Kill McAfee, Symantec (MSFT)

windows-onecare.jpgWhen Microsoft (MSFT) announced it was abandoning its unsucessful $50 "Windows Live OneCare" in favor of a new, free security suite named "Morro," we wondered how companies like McAfee (MFE) or Symantec (SYMC) would be able to compete against a free product.

HD Netflix Streaming Coming To The Xbox (NFLX, MSFT)

giz-netflix-image.jpgOne more perk for Netflix (NFLX) subscribers with Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360s: They'll be able to watch a tiny selection of hi-def movies from Netflix’s “Watch Instantly” service, starting next month. Netflix will make 300 titles available in HD in addition to 12,000 titles offered in a standard resolution format.

Microsoft Brags Xbox Beat The PS3 3-to-1 In Black Friday Sales, Pretends The Wii Doesn't Exist (MSFT)

Microsoft Trying To Shiv the Potential Google-Verizon Wireless Search Deal

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) is trying hard to snatch away the search deal that Google (NSDQ: GOOG) has been working on with the second largest U.S. carrier Verizon Wireless (NYSE: VZ), and has offered a much sweeter rev share deal as part of it, reports WSJ, citing sources. MSFT saw an opening as Google was distracted trying to work and defend its search ad pact with Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO), which was officially called off yesterday, the story says. Details of Google’s talks with VZW came out in August, and at that time the deal was supposed to be a comprehensive one: Google would have been the default search provider on Verizon devices and would give it a share of ad revenue. The search functionality would be on VZW’s homescreen. Later on, the deal could extend to Verizon’s Web portal and even its FiOS TV service.

Verizon Wireless Search Deal: Microsoft Closing on It; Guarantees May Cross $500M Mark

imageMicrosoft is finally close to edging out Google on a search deal, and this one is on the mobile side: it is close to finalizing its deal to become the default search provider on the carrier’s phones, and is even offering guaranteed payments to the carrier of approximately $550 million to $650 million over five years, or roughly twice what Google (NSDQ: GOOG) offered, reports WSJ, citing sources. These revenues would be against the ads that MSFT would be able to serve up in mobile searches. Verizon’s talks with Google are still on, but it is leaning towards MSFT because of better financial incentives.

MSFT eyes Yahoo search?

the Redmond, Wash., software giant, is in talks to buy Yahoo Inc.'s search business for $20 billion, the Sunday Times of London reported. Microsoft does not plan to bid for all of the Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet-services giant, after it abandoned a $47.5 billion proposal last summer, the paper reported. Under a deal the companies are planning, Microsoft also would support new management for Yahoo, possibly led by Jonathan Miller, the former chairman and chief executive of AOL,

Microsoft: Live Search Cashback Ad Biz Growing

Microsoft (MSFT) has released the latest set of data for its controversial Live Search Cashback program, which offers users monetary incentives to click through and buy goods from the ads they’re shown. The results? Things seem to be looking good from a ROI perspective, as users are responding to the ads more than they typically do on other search engines (though this isn’t very surprising, as they are being offered money). More significant is the fact that Microsoft’s share of ad dollars has risen significantly, especially in proportion to its relatively weak market share (which has largely languished, despite the new program).

Movers: Microsoft, Ingersoll-Rand, T. Rowe Price

Microsoft (MSFT) posted first-quarter EPS of 48 cents, vs. 45 cents one year earlier, on a 9% revenue rise. The company said trends seen late in the first quarter are now forecasted to continue, whereas previous expectations were for the economy to improve in the second half of fiscal 2009. Microsoft sees second-quarter revenue of $17.3-$17.8 billion and EPS of 51-53 cents. It sees fiscal 2009 revenue of $64.9-$66.4 billion and EPS of $2.00-$2.10. Wall Street is looking for $2.11.

Microsoft Gears Up For New Mobile Browser

Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) took a step closer to releasing its new mobile browser today, after releasing technical information to developers at its TechEd conference in Europe. In a blog post, the company said that Internet Explorer Mobile 6 will be available soon on new Windows Mobile devices, and will provide an experience that more closely resembles desktop browsing. Some of the features include: improved fidelity for full desktop rendering; text wrapping to accommodate a mobile screen, Flash Lite support, touch and gesture support, and multiple zoom levels.

Microsoft Xbox to Drive Social Networking to the TV

Microsoft Corp.(MSFT) is reportedly one of the companies to move in this new direction, with plans to unveil Nov. 19 a new version of Xbox Live that goes beyond gaming to include a chat feature. It allows up to eight people to communicate and is intended to expand the appeal of Xbox Live beyond just serious gamers.

Who Will Win? Microsoft Doubles Google's Offer to Verizon

Now that Microsoft (MSFT) has apparently moved on from Yahoo (YHOO), the software giant is looking for new avenues to attack Google (GOOG), its arch-enemy. The latest battlefront is mobile search, and the Wall Street Journal is reporting that Microsoft is close to securing a major strategic beachhead.
