Google plans to expand its finance Web site by adding more historical data and company filings as it tries to gain ground on more-popular services from Yahoo and AOL. The company will also seek to improve its 2-year-old finance site by offering real-time stock prices from the New York Stock Exchange on a permanent basis after a four-month pilot started this week, said R.J. Pittman, director of product management. Google's finance pages had 2.07 million U.S. visitors last month, ranking 13th on researcher ComScore's list of top financial sites. The company plans to use its search technology to help users find data more efficiently, rather than adding editorial content to lure more users, Pittman said. Adding features such as up-to-the-minute stock quotes will help Google lure more visitors that may then visit the company's other sites, sai

Apple, maker of the iPod media player, said its iTunes online store has sold more than 5 billion songs since its debut five years ago as more fans abandon record shops for the Web. The site is the most popular in the United States for legal music downloads, with more than 8 million songs. Sales of downloaded songs and mobile-phone ring tones rose 34 percent to $2.9 billion.

"More and more, open source projects are either integrating with the web or are developed entirely for on-demand use. This requires strong web development skills--or at least good enough tools to rescue you if any of your web development skills are weak. The good news is that there are many free open source tools to help you with your web project, and given the costs of web development environments and the like, they can save you a lot of money. Here are more than five good examples.

I never thought of it this way, but Dan Frommer over at Silicon Alley Insider has done an interesting comparison between the decade-old iMac and the iPhone. The short version? The iPhone wins on most metrics. It has a faster processor, more memory, and even more storage capacity, and far outdistances the specs of the original 1984 Mac. Send it back in time and an iPhone, would have more than enough power to guide the moon landing, provided NASA had a copy of the SDK.

Design used to be managed by professionals who had studied graphic design, but as budgets get tighter, speed becomes more and more important, and Web pages are critical for businesses, designers are more likely to be an afterthought. But knowing some graphic design rules can help your designs even if you\'ve never taken any courses in design.

Does your cell phone bill ever reach astronomical proportions? Maybe you're doing too much texting. One space scientist has worked out that sending texts via mobile phones works out to be far more expensive than downloading data from the Hubble Space Telescope. Dr. Nigel Bannister from the University of Leicester looked at the cost of obtaining a megabyte of data from Hubble and compared it with the cost of sending a text. His calculations? “The bottom line is texting is at least 4 times more expensive than transmitting data from Hubble, and is likely to be substantially more than that."

With more and more data being stored in XML, web applications today commonly need some way to view and edit the data stored in an XML file from a web page interface. If the XML data is relatively "flat" and tabular in nature, we can use data Web controls like the DataGrid, GridView, and Repeater. (See Quickly Editing XML Data for an example of editing XML data through a DataGrid control.) But what if the XML data is more hierarchical and in a less tabular format? Consider a company-wide phone book, which is recursively structured into branches and departments, subdepartments, and so forth. How can this XML data, which can have any number of nodes and any level of children, be displayed and edited through a web page? More...

Google, following similar moves by the two biggest online hangouts, is introducing tools that are supposed to make any Web site more sociable. The service, which was expected to be available on a limited basis Monday evening, provides a framework that enables people to interact with their friends and use favorite applications they have accumulated on social networks like Facebook and Plaxo even when they aren't visiting those sites. Google's initiative, called "Friend Connect," follows pledges by MySpace and Facebook last week to allow their users to transport their personal profiles and applications to other Web sites. MySpace and Facebook - the Internet's two largest social hubs - announced their plans for wider accessibility late last week.

IconIt seems that I am in some sort of retro-mode. As Linux on the desktop is getting bigger and better, with more apps, more sleek looks (Galaxy, Keramik and Blue Curve for example) and more idiot proof, I am going onto simpler, more condensed stuff. The big distributions are nice, but I really do not need all the applications that come with them all the time.

First-person shooter fans generally prefer the controls of a PC, using a mouse to aim and the keyboard to move around. You get more buttons for access to hotkeys and you can fire while looking around more easily. Console controllers are a little more awkward for such purposes and take more getting used to. Some people don't think that has to be the case, however.

mjasay sends us a link to a CNet story, which begins: "In the '20 percent time' that Google employees have to work on projects of personal interest, it turns out that an increasing number are spending time writing open-source projects for their Macs. Google has long had a fondness for the Mac, with upwards of 6,000 of its 20,000 current employees opting to use the Mac over Windows. It is in the 20 percent employee development time, however, where this statistic becomes interesting. At Google, development time translates into products. The more Mac-friendly employees, the more Mac-related development. The more Mac-related development, the more Google-sponsored Mac-based open-source code. As Google's Mac Developer Playground demonstrates, some of this code is quite interesting.
