The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum), a salamander that also goes by the names of the "water monster" or the "Mexican walking fish," was an important element in Aztec legends and diet. As legend has it, the Aztec god of lightning, death and monstrosities, Xolotl, changed into an axolotl and ran into hiding in the Xochimilco lake after hearing he was to be banished or even killed by the other gods. The tiny lizard shares the god's fate, as it is now also facing extinction due to the urbanization of Mexico City, lying on the shores of its natural habitat – Lake Xochimilco.

Rumors of a RED DSLR had been confirmed a long time ago, but what of the Scarlet and EPIC übercamcorders? On the REDUser forums, RED CEO Jim Jannard has explained it all: Scarlet and EPIC are the DSLR — all cameras are "part of the same DSMC system", so each and every camera will be part of a modular, build-your-own, still and video product line based on the Scarlet and EPIC 'Brains'. To do this, RED has furnished an insanely diverse new collection of components, with sensors ranging from the $2500 3k Scarlet to the $55,000, 28k EPIC 617 Mysterium Monstro.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has found an answer to a long-standing puzzle by resolving giant but delicate filaments shaped by a strong magnetic field around the active galaxy NGC 1275. It is the most striking example of the influence of the immense tentacles of extragalactic magnetic fields. The galaxy was photographed in July and August 2006 with the Advanced Camera for Surveys in three color filters.

NASA gets a lot of criticism, for cost overruns, launch delays, and technical failings. Some of this is certainly justified. But some of it is the product of the fact that NASA embodies the spiritual hopes of an activist community that believes humanity’s destiny is among the stars and considers many NASA actions heretical. However, NASA is a model of efficiency and good government when compared to the American military and intelligence space programs, which have been in turmoil for a decade or more. Despite the fact that our security depends upon them, there is little public outcry of the fact that, as many Defense officials and others concede, the military and intelligence space programs are a total mess.
