Substitution of one pyridine by pyrazine in each DPA appendage of ZP1 leads to a new zinc sensor, ZPP1, with a modified background fluorescence and zinc affinity. ZPP1 exhibits a two-step zinc response during fluorescence titrations, which leads to a new method for zinc quantification. The ability of ZPP1 to image and quantify zinc was demonstrated in pancreatic Min6 cells.

holy_calamity writes "New Scientist reports on the latest idea from researchers trying to make microcomputers use photons in place of electrons — to make optical interconnects from strands of DNA. Mixing DNA strands with the right dye molecule upgrades them into wires for light, like microscopic optical fibers, able to absorb photons at one end and transmit them to the other. One of the neat things about using DNA is it is the right scale to play nicely with existing and future chip lithography. Quoting: 'The result is similar to natural photonic wires found inside organisms like algae, where they are used to transport photons to parts of a cell where their energy can be tapped. In these wires, chromophores are lined up in chains to channel photons.

This month, NASA began testing a new protocol for communications in outer space that could extend the reliability and versatility of the Internet out of the Earth's atmosphere. The new protocol, called Disruption-Tolerant Networking, or DTN, has been in the works for ten years, passed a month of testing with a just-launched spacecraft and nine ground stations, but is still scheduled to undergo further tests.

In testimony Thursday on Capitol Hill, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. chairman Sheila Bair provided the first public update on the FDIC’s loan modification program put into place at IndyMac Federal Bank since it was introduced roughly two months ago. The agency took over IndyMac in July, and announced the loan modification program on Aug. 20; Bair has said that FDIC analysts estimated that 40,000 or so of the 60,000 mortgages more than 60 days in arrears at IndyMac would qualify for a loan modification under the program.

The figure shows the LEMUR IIb, which is a modified version of the LEMUR II — the second generation of the Limbed Excursion Mechanical Utility Robot (LEMUR). Except as described below, the LEMUR IIb hardware is mostly the same as that of the LEMUR II. The IIb and II versions differ in their kinematic configurations and characteristics associated with their kinematic configurations. The differences are such that relative to the LEMUR II, the LEMUR IIb is simpler and is better suited to climbing on inclined surfaces.

angrymilkman writes "Here are two interesting new approaches where researchers modified the popular Guitar Hero game so it can be played by gamers with disabilities. Air Guitar Hero modifies the Guitar Hero controller so someone without limbs can play it by using electrodes attached to the user's residual arm. Blind Hero is a mod for Frets on Fire that uses a haptic glove that can turn visual feedback into haptic feedback, allowing blind gamers to play Guitar Hero songs." There have been a variety of Guitar Hero hacks in the past, including a custom drum pad for playing the guitar part, using the plastic guitar as a real instrument, and rocking out with your bike, but it's nice to see some more serious modifications showing up.
