The New York Times is running a story about Johnny Chung Lee, a hardware hacker made famous for his projects which modified the Nintendo Wiimote to do things like positional head tracking and multi-touch display control. The article focuses on the suggestion that Lee's use of YouTube to demonstrate his innovations has done a better job of communicating his ideas than more traditional methods could. Quoting: "He might have published a paper that only a few dozen specialists would have read. A talk at a conference would have brought a slightly larger audience. In either case, it would have taken months for his ideas to reach others. Small wonder, then, that he maintains that posting to YouTube has been an essential part of his success as an inventor.

If you are one of the recipients of the 1,330 business method patents issued in the U.S. last year, or the thousands more that have been issued rampantly and indiscriminately over the past decade, you are probably out of luck. The U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. ruled today that business methods are not patentable unless they meet fairly narrow rules. What this means for Internet companies and patent trolls alike is that many of their existing patents may be invalid — at least until the case is heard by the Supreme Court, assuming it is appealed.

Ten years ago, in a case called State Street Bank vs. Signature Financial Group, a federal circuit court found that novel methods for doing business on computers were patentable. That opened the gates to a flood of âbusiness method patentsâ of features like Amazon.comâs â1-Clickâ checkout and Priceline.comâs âname your own price” tools, which involve less technological ingenuity than ethereal inventiveness and legal muscle.

Although EU patent law expressly excludes patenting software as such, it does allow patents to be granted for computer-implemented inventions. There are, however, many unanswered questions about the distinction between software methods and computer-implemented inventions. In practice, the EPO has historically granted patent applications in some cases for software methods that are viewed as legitimate technical innovations rather than business innovations. The EPO illustrates the difference by saying that a patent on a software method for improving signal strength between mobile phones is likely to be valid, but a patent on Internet auction systems is probably not.

Quantum computers may be the perennial “computer of the future,” but if (or when) they do become a reality, their sheer power could threaten the security of our information-technology infrastructure. Online shopping, e-mail, and automatic software updates rely on public-key cryptography methods to ensure those transactions are safe. The two main methods of public-key cryptography are RSA, which is based on an algorithm that relies on the difficulty of factoring large numbers, and elliptic-curve cryptography (ECC), which is based on the mathematical structure of elliptical curves. But a quantum computer could quickly crack either cryptosystem. In October, the University of Cincinnati hosted an international cryptography conference with industry and government experts to address this very problem.

The C++ compiler has the ability to produce both native and managed instructions. The /clr compiler switch is the basic option for turning managed instruction generation on and off, but beginning with Visual C++ 2005, finer grained control over managed instruction generation is possible. Managed code can be written using C++/CLI in a manner that is verifiably type-safe, which means that it can be statically analyzed to ensure that it only accesses the member variables and methods of a type correctly. Without verifiable type safety, pointer arithmetic can be used to access methods and member variables indirectly, potentially bypassing the inbuilt security checks that are present in the .NET runtime. A binary that is verifiably type-safe can be hosted in more environments, like SQL Server and hosted environments, and can be deployed in more
