#50: Confirmed: 1969 Meteorite Brought Genetic Building Blocks From Space

In June astrobiologists announced [pdf] they had found a key component of genetic material within a meteorite. The discovery supports the idea that asteroid bombardment four billion years ago may have jump-started the emergence of life.

Columbia Report, NASA's Future, An Ancient Meteorite

A NASA report cited a number of design flaws involved in the Columbia space shuttle disaster that happened nearly six years ago. Due to the poor design of their pressure suits, all seven astronauts blacked out almost immediately once the spacecraft started breaking up during re-entry, officials said. All perished in the crash.

University asteroid hunters find 100 meteorites as Prairie cold sets in

More than 100 meteorites have been collected by the University of Calgary since a 10-tonne fireball lit up the border of Saskatchewan and Alberta on Nov. 20. The team of asteroid hunters expects their collection to set a Canadian record for the largest-ever recorded meteorite fall. As many as 20 volunteers, including students, locals, professors and amateur astronomers, have been scouring for the rocks for more than a month in Lloydminster, Sask. Frigid temperatures and heavy snowfall have complicated the search. "Finding all we could before the snow came on Dec. 6 was a real challenge and tough on searchers, with wind chills routinely colder than -20C," said asteroid expert Alan Hildebrand, pictured.
