metadata: search

Sony Buys Metadata King Gracenote Acquisition of Gracenote gives Sony control of largest CD and DVD database.

Gracenote manages the world's most complete database of CD metadata. When you put a CD in your computer, iTunes does an automatic metadata search, and information pops up including artist, song, album, genre, etc. When you rip the CD, the metadata is bound to the track so that you can find it in your iPod under artist, song, album, genre, etc.

Using a Metadata Schema with the Microsoft Sharepoint Portal Server

Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server is an intricate document management system. In addition to dynamic document management features, SharePoint Portal Server offers a search portal for locating documents. This document has been created so that users of the Microsoft SharePoint Portal Server1 can benefit from using metadata and an enterprise-wide metadata schema. A metadata schema is the standard set of meta tags for a document collection.

Siderean Announces New Solution for Metadata Generation

Siderean Software, provider of Seamark Navigator, an enterprise content navigation solution, has announced a product and services solution for extracting and aligning metadata from large amounts of unstructured and structured data based on the IBM Unstructured Information Management Architecture (UIMA). Metadata Promotion in SAS 9.2

Promotion of metadata content is typically used to support movement across Development, Test, and Production environments. In SAS 9.1.3, the paper provided tools for full repository promotion and partial promotion. In SAS 9.2, these tools have been enhanced to streamline functionality and provide batch interfaces. SAS Management Console will continue to provide interfaces for full repository replication and partial promotion via the export/import framework that exists in SAS 9.1.3 with the BI Manager plug-in. In SAS 9.2, the authors have implemented a batch interface for the partial promotion framework that will allow one to create a schedulable and repeatable process for moving a set of metadata content across ones environments.

Metadata Consolidation

In storage there is always a discussion about storage consolidation; taking all your dispersed storage assets and consolidating them to a single consolidated storage system. But there's a different kind of storage fragmentation going almost unnoticed in metadata, or data about data. Many applications create metadata -- backup systems, data movement or archive applications, data management applications, and content search applications -- but only few consolidate them.

Metadata?Not Just for Librarians Anymore

In January this year I found myself in the wonderful city of Brussels. The reason for the trip was that I had been invited to act as an "expert" at a workshop that had been set up by the European Committee on Standardization (CEN) to discuss aspects of the use of the Dublin Core metadata scheme in the corporate sector. You may find this difficult to believe, but the attraction in attending was not the gastronomic delights of Brussels or the vanity of being an expert, but rather an increasing interest in metadata in the corporate sector.

Metadata: Ethical Obligations of the Witting and Unwitting Recipient

Forensic Implications of Metadata in Electronic Files

JUNE 2008 - In this digital age, most business activities are transacted and recorded using networked information systems. Business and accounting records are prepared, reviewed, audited, and preserved in electronic form, commonly called electronically stored information (ESI). It is estimated that 94% to 99% of all business records are created and maintained in electronic form (National Law Journal, July 17, 2006) and most are never transformed into hard copy. A unique characteristic of electronic records is that they include hidden metadata that comprise extensive information about the creation of a file, including “MAC dates” (the dates a file was modified, accessed, and created), the date last printed, and, if deleted, when it was deleted and by whom.

MetaCheater lets you extract timecode and reel ID metadata from QuickTime movies and save it out as an Avid Log Exchange file (.ALE).

MetaCheater lets you select one or more QuickTime movies, and through a variety of settings, you can work with any number of workflows, depending on the metadata extracted. It’s a great way, for example, to work with QuickTime files associated with a RED Camera workflow, as I explained in my previous tutorial in the April issue.

Macrovision Acquires Assets From ThoughtWorthy Media For TV Search And Metadata

A small deal for Macrovision… the company says it has acquired technology and the website of ThoughtWorthy Media, a vertical, TV-related search engine. The agreement was entered back into January by Gemstar (though unannounced until now), now part of Macrovision (NSDQ: MVSN). The ThoughtWorthy site (which just redirects now to TVGuide.com) allowed users to search for content found on TV, like music, and then purchase it. This functionality will now be part of TVGuide.com, an asset the company is keeping despite the planned disposal of the physical magazine. Besides the consumer-facing aspect to it, it also builds out Macrovision’s metadata capabilities, which includes the previously acquired All Music Guide. Release.

Australian Officials Accidentally Reveal Google As Responsible For Anti-eBay Filing

Last month, we wrote about plans by eBay in Australia to ban all non-PayPal payment solutions from the auction site. This has set off quite a firestorm, especially from folks who don't particularly like PayPal. Australian regulators are looking into the matter, and have asked for comments from anyone interested, some of which it's posting online. Most of the comments come with the name of the individual and/or company who sent it in -- but a few were posted anonymously, at the submitter's request. However, it appears that regulators didn't do a very good job scouring for metadata, as someone who looked more closely at the PDF file discovered that it clearly says "Submission by Google re eBay" in the metadata (found via Slashdot).
