Carbon nanotubes as molecular scales

As researchers look at smaller and smaller objects, it gets hard to measure quantities directly. To get around this, they typically measure a related quantity. One simple way to measure mass is to use a beam attached to a solid fixed substrate. When something is resting on the the beam, it will deflect and vibrate. The deflection will be related to the mass of the object resting on it, its distance from the fixed end, and the stiffness of the beam itself. Addition mass will change the frequency at which the beam vibrates as well, and the change in frequency will be directly related to the proportional change in mass.

Device to Measure Wind on Mars Will Soon be Landing

A University of Alberta researcher is counting down the days until the Phoenix Mars Lander spacecraft lands on Mars. He created an instrument on the lander called the Telltale. It will be used to measure winds in the polar region of Mars.

BEC bubble could measure nanoscale forces

Two physicists in the US have come up with a way to use a “bubble” of ultracold atoms to measure extremely small forces. The scheme, which has yet to be tested experimentally, involves monitoring the motion of a bubble of one type of atomic gas that is surrounded by another atomic gas. The physicists claim that accelerations as small as 0.1 nm/s

Using Static Analysis Tools to Identify Code Smells

"The measure for finding duplicated code is to search for code duplication within classes and among other classes in the code base. Duplication among classes is more difficult to assess without the help of a tool. Because of the slight changes that copied code can often undergo, it's important to measure code that is not simply copied verbatim, but also code that is similar."

Researchers Measure Movement of Nanomaterials in Simple Food Chain

A new study from the National Institute of Standards and Technology shows that while engineered nanomaterials can transfer up the lowest levels of the food chain from single celled organisms to higher multicelled ones, the amount transferred is relatively low and there is no evidence of the nanomaterials concentrating in the higher level organisms.
