bxwatso writes "My niece just took the ACT and got a perfect score on the math section. 25 years ago, when I took the test, the kids who aced the math section were pretty special. Her score, combined with straight A's so far in high school, suggest to me that she might be able to go to a top university (MIT?) based on her math aptitude. The rub is that she doesn't like math or science, even though she finds them easy. She doesn't want to be an engineer or scientist. I thought the folks here would be a great group to ask: What are some creative, not too nerdy professions that nonetheless require a talent for math, engineering, or science?"

An anonymous reader writes "As a third-year PhD math student, I am currently taking Partial Differential Equations. I'm working hard to understand all the math being thrown at us in that class, and that is okay. The problem is, I have never taken any physics anywhere. Most of the problems in PDEs model some sort of physical situation. It would be nice to be able to have in the back of my mind where this is all coming from. We constantly hear about the heat equation, wave equation, gravitational potential, etc. I'm told I should not worry about what the equations describe and just learn how to work with them, but I would rather not follow that advice. Can anyone recommend physics books for someone in my position? I don't want to just pick up a book for undergrads.

chebucto writes "The opening chord to A Hard Day's Night is famous because for 40 years, no one quite knew exactly what chord Harrison was playing. Musicians, scholars and amateur guitar players alike had all come up with their own theories, but it took a Dalhousie mathematician to figure out the exact formula. Dr. Brown used Fourier transforms to find the notes in the chord, and deduced that another George β George Martin, the Beatles producer β also played on the chord, adding a piano chord that included an F note impossible to play with the other notes on the guitar."

The Gartner numbers seem positive, and encouraging -- especially in light of the acknowledgement that the remaining 15% are planning to move toward more open source software in the near future. Then Gartner drops the bad news -- cases that Moody says don't end badly (they are usually remedied with a polite phone call) or even happen terribly frequently (12 or so cases a year) -- that 69% of companies have no formal method of evaluating and cataloging their open source applications, leaving them at risk of intellectual property liabilities.

Nothing seems wright today. At school, got mental block during math II, Aben really annoys me, & Mirol kept on bugging me. PMS may be the source of this moodiness. Anyway, later evening planed to grab BR's ice cream since it is the 31st of Oct, but Papa has came up another idea to annoy me (CONGRATULATION, it worked). I had to stay in because some furnitures will be arrive home and he cant trust the maid (the younger one). 3 Banglas came and fix the study table. One of them was damn wright creepy- kept on starring at me. Whatever, when they left, I'd lost all my mood and changed clothes. Suddenly, I saw lumps, bumps and I believe cellulites too. OMGOMGOMGOMG.! Then here I am, still praying to God to give me the strength, lighten my ass to workout, and eat less.
