The army of groveling subordinates I've surrounded myself with each Sunday can retire, as I've found a machine to replace them: The Applause Machine by artist Martin Smith. The ingenious device produces instant applause at the touch of a button. Martin created the machine “for when your ideas are great but no one else agrees.” Welcome to my world, Martin. I'll take ten.

Martin Cooper, a researcher at Motorola, made the world's first-ever call from a cellular telephone on April 3, 1973. This week, during a keynote address at the Embedded Systems Conference in Boston, Martin took aim at the wireless industry he helped spawn several decades ago, saying they engaged in "upside down" and "backward" practices. "We were promised affordable, ubiquitous broadband wireless for everyone," he told a crowd of engineers. "That promise is still just a promise." Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, as well as Olivia Harrison and Yoko Ono have all given their blessing to the as-yet untitled game; and Giles Martin, the son of the Beatles’ producer, George Martin, will serve as the project’s music pr
