reported a 5% increase in third-quarter revenues over the prior-year quarter, with strong sales of used video game software offsetting a decline in sales of new video game consoles and accessories. Management indicated that overseas sales were weaker than expected, and the firm resorted to cost-cutting measures to maintain operating profitability. The shift in revenue mix toward higher-margin used video game software resulted in gross margins climbing 2 percentage points over the year-ago period, to about 28%. Despite this, operating margins declined half a percentage point from the comparable period, to 5.5%, as GameStop's European business generated an operating loss in the quarter.
