PineApp Unveils Mail Encryption Software

With encryption widely recognized as the only effective way to ensure data protection, PineApp has introduced its first full mail encryption solution. PineApp Mail Encryption Solution provides centralized management for email security that requires no training for users, who simply send and receive emails as normal. PineApp Mail Encryption Solution is integrated with PineApp's award-winning Mail-SeCure appliance that also provides powerful perimeter security and comprehensive anti-spam, anti-virus, content filtering and email management tools. As encryption is designated to protect sensitive content only, not all emails need to be protected. Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.18

Mozilla Thunderbird is a redesign of the Mozilla mail component. Our goal is to produce a cross platform stand alone mail application using the XUL user interface language. Our intended customer is someone who uses Mozilla Firebird (or another stand alone browser) as their primary browser and wants a mail client based on mozilla that "plays nice" with the browser. In addition, by focusing solely on stand alone mail, we believe we can make some dents in the overall footprint and performance of the mail client by removing components and chrome we don't need. On top of that, the UI becomes much cleaner as a stand alone application as opposed to being part of the mozilla suite.

Is outsourcing to Google Mail really the way to go?

Now, there have been various reports of Google mail outages, along with bad or non-existent Google technical support. I myself have had recurring brief trouble with outgoing mail at one of my domains. (My workaround is just to send from the other of the two email domains I use. This works for everything except Yahoo Groups, and within an hour I can resend to there anyway. If I only had one domain, I might do my retries through my web hosting company when Google is hiccupping.) I've even made fun of Google Mail's ads.

Any reminiscences welcome at this email address.

Seven ways to push mail to the iPhone -- without Exchange

In Part 2 of my series on rolling out the iPhone as a business device, I talked about integration in an Exchange environment. Though the iPhone supports all common e-mail protocols, Exchange is the only business-oriented option for offering push notification of new messages as well as over-the-air updates to calendar and contact items. Sure, push notification and update is supported by Apple's MobileMe -- and push e-mail notification is supported for Yahoo Mail accounts. But neither of these would be considered viable options for most businesses.

The v2.2 update provides the Maps app with Google Street View, and public transit directions. Dropped pins will now show addresses, and users can share locations over email. The Mail app itself had allegedly isolated issues resolved from scheduled fetching of email, and the formatting of wide HTML mail.

Husband blames iPhone for smutty pictures that upset his wife

"Please help! I took my husband's i-phone and found a raunchy picture of him attached to an e-mail to a woman in his sent e-mail file (a Yahoo account). When I approached him about this (I think that he is cheating on me) he admitted that he took the picture but says that he never sent it to anyone. He claims that he went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple store and they told him that it is an i-phone glitch: that photos sometimes automatically attach themselves to an e-mail address and appear in the sent folder, even though no e-mail was ever sent. Has anyone ever heard of this happening? The future of my marriage depends on this answer!"

Apple Releases Over 25 Fixes for MobileMe

Since launching the MobileMe syncing service in July, Apple has been working on various fixes. Earlier this week, Apple revealed that 27 changes were made late last month. MobileMe is a hosted service, so you don’t have to do anything to get the updates—Apple made all of the changes on the servers. All components of the service were affected by the update, with MobileMe Mail receiving the most updates. Keyboard shortcuts that didn’t behave as expected were fixed, along with a bug that didn’t remove messages from the Drafts folder once they were sent. MobileMe Mail users should also see improved performance when first logging in to MobileMe Mail and also when Junk Mail Filtering is enabled.

Export RSS feed list from Mail in 10.5

In OS X 10.5, Mail gained the ability to read RSS feeds. While this isn’t a feature I use myself—it’s actually something I recently complained about—that doesn’t mean I’m not willing to share an RSS tip or two. First, because a couple people have asked me relative to the above-linked story, here’s how to get rid of the RSS section if you don’t want to use it or see it: Control-click on each listed feed and choose Delete Feed from the contextual menu. When you delete the last feed, the RSS entry disappears from the sidebar. If, in the future, you decide you’d like to see RSS feeds in Mail again, you can use the File -> Add RSS Feeds menu item to do so.

Wide-format e-mail apps for iPhone

Since Apple released the first iPhone in June 2007, a frequent complaint among users has been the lack of a landscape keyboard in more applications. Users got a taste of this wider, larger-button keyboard in the mobile version of Safari and wished they could use it for text entry in other scenarios. Composing e-mail is easily the most-common example; after all, with the exception of those in the SMS crowd, more typing time is spent in Mail than in any other app.
