Ina Dews of Elgin, Illinois, recently donated three quilts made by African-American women to the Illinois State Museum. These are the only African American-made quilts in the Museum’s collections. Ms.Dews, a well-known quilt maker, came to Springfield to make this donation. She presented a quilt she fondly calls “Puffs,” which is the second quilt that she stitched when she was fifteen.

javipas writes "GPLv3 and LGPLv3 were released one year ago, on 29 June 2007. Palamida, who tracks Open Source projects, has made a study of the current situation of these licenses along with AGPLv3, which was released later, in November. The number of projects that have made the transition to these licenses has grown over the last months, and it seems than AGPLv3 has captured a great interest lately. Black Duck Software, a company that tracks Open Source projects too, has made its own study with similar results, and although GPLv3 and its variants have a good adoption rate, the interviews published on the Palamida site (Stallman, Chris Di Bona) show that the acceptance of GPLv3 has still a long way to walk."

John Buckman from Magnatune clues us that the trailer for Iron Sky is available. We've been following the production for some time, as these are the same guys who brought us Star Wreck, the most successful feature-length Internet-distributed film of all time. That film was made by 3,000 people, has been downloaded 8 million times, is under a Creative Commons by-nd-nc license, and made good money both through DVD sales and through an eventual deal with Universal. Iron Sky is being made using Wreck-a-Movie — a collaborative film-making web site (also Creative Commons based) that grew out of the Star Wreck experience."

As population growth, food production and the regional effects of climate change place greater stress on the Earths natural water supply, man-made water created by removing salt from seawater and brackish groundwater through reverse osmosis desalination will become an increasingly important resource for millions of humans, especially those in arid regions such as the Middle East, the western United States, northern Africa and central Asia.

Just move your eyes down the page. Yes, we know, we want one too. Unfortunately, this Niko BellicMunnyis one of a kind - custom made by artist Scavenjer, apparently for friends at Rockstar New York. Seriously, these need to be in shops. We would buy at least a hundred so we could have our own army of Niko midgets. You can check out more of the talented Scavenjer's work here.

A new system to generate coherent extreme-ultraviolet (EUV) light has been developed by researchers in Korea. The device, based on a nanostructure made of bow-tie shaped gold "antennas" on a sapphire substrate, is smaller and cheaper than existing systems and might allow a laptop-sized EUV source to be constructed directly from a single femtosecond light pulse. Applications include high-resolution biological imaging, advanced lithography of nanoscale patterns and perhaps "X-ray clocks".

Layers of plastic, much thinner than a strand of hair—this type of ultrathin polymer film is of great interest to scientists and engineers. Applications include protective coatings, for example. A research team led by Stefan Mecking at the University of Konstanz has now developed a new method to produce wafer-thin layers. As reported in the journal Angewandte Chemie, the scientists made their films from individual prefabricated nanocrystal building blocks.
