(Nanowerk News) Researchers in Japan have identified part of the mechanism responsible for preventing prolongedand potentially dangerousactivation of immune cells called T lymphocytes ("A Lysosomal Protein Negatively Regulates Surface T Cell Antigen Receptor Expression by Promoting CD3ζ-Chain Degradation"). Each decorated with a unique surface receptor (TCR) capable of detecting pathogenic foreign proteins, T lymphocytes circulate throughout the body patrolling for invading microorganisms. Upon encounter with rogue proteins, TCRs triggervia a complex of CD3 signaling proteinsintracellular events that orchestrate release of pro-inflammatory mediators called cytokines.

By manipulating the machinery used by our cells for quality control, researchers from the University of Pittsburgh have found a way to restore the function of cystic fibrosis (CF) airway cells. This could significantly reduce the sticky mucus that plugs the lungs of CF patients, which leads to antibiotic-resistant infections and untimely death.

Automation in the sense of computer- driven machinery has long been used either inside programmable controllers or PCs running inside machines, usually with dedicated displays. Yet, manufacturers often regard the king of automation the industrial robot as a “costly and complex” solution. Why?

Hybride And The Groom writes "Building hybrids uses machinery that pollutes the environment. The solution? Ship the parts of a hybrid individually and get your customers to put the car together themselves. That's exactly what Robert Q Riley Enterprises is doing, according to a story on CNet today, with its XR-3 hybrid. It'll cost you $25,000 for the bits, plus zero dollars in manufacture, I hope. Better yet, cough up $200 for the blueprints and schematics and even build the parts yourself. It's no secret that many hybrid drivers are smug enough as it is. Allow them to brag about having built the damn cars themselves and we might be entering obscenely smug territory."
