How To Remotely Install Debian Over A RH Based Distro

"In this tutorial, I have an ancient Fedora Core 3 machine that I need to turn into a Debian Etch machine. The machine is 600 miles from my home office so traveling to put in CDs is not an economical option. The system has one 80G hard drive that is currently divided into 3 partitions: a 100M /boot partition, a 1G swap partition, and the remainder as the / partition for the Fedora Core installation. The machine has a public static IP address and will be accessed through an SSH connection."

Remotely joining a machine to a Windows domain

I ran into an interesting problem today. Basically, a whole bunch of machine accounts got deleted from a domain. Because the machine accounts where spread across numerous OUs, the sheer numbers delete accounts, and the duration between deletion and realization, doing some type of restore would have proved interesting. So... the question was posed. How can one remotely make a large number of machines re-join the domain once their accounts have been deleted from the directory?

The DIY Dialysis Machine

Millie Kelly was born with a condition that required an immediate operation. During this operation her kidneys started to fail and since she was too small for dialysis machines, doctors told her parents that she was unlikely to live. Luckily for Millie, Dr. Malcolm Coulthard and a colleague tried to build a much smaller kidney machine on their own and they were successful. Her mother said, "It was a green metal box with a few paint marks on it with quite a few wires coming out of it into my daughter - it didn't look like a normal NHS one." The girl was hooked up to the machine over a seven day period to allow her kidneys to recover. Two years later, her mother Rebecca says she is "fit as a fiddle." You should see what Dr. Coulthard can build using a postage stamp, a tuning fork, a lawn chair and a jellyfish.

Sony to launch new PSP game machine

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc will release a new model of its PlayStation Portable game machine in Japan, other parts of Asia, North America and Europe from October. The new portable machine, PSP-3000, features a higher-resolution liquid crystal display and a built-in microphone, said SCE, a unit of Japanese electronics giant Sony Corp.

.NET TIP: Using .NET Reflector

Code written in a .NET language like C# is referred to as managed code. That is, it is not compiled into machine-specific instructions. Instead, .NET compiles into MSIL (Microsoft intermediate language). MSIL is a machine-independent instruction set that is compiled at runtime by the .NET CLR (common language runtime). A similar sequence of events takes place in the Java world, within the JVM (Java Virtual Machine). This extra compilation step is the key to .NET's success. Code executes in a protected sandbox, the managed environment of the CLR. It can provide greater security, stability, and it can run on any piece of hardware that the CLR supports, which may someday include non-Microsoft platforms. With executable programs produced by traditional languages, it can be very difficult to analyze the original source code.

Flexible Robotic Production Cell Solution

A flexible robotic production cell solution has been delivered to Deutsch UK by robotics and automation specialist Aylesbury Automation. The robot-based machine assembles a range of similar, two pin electrical plugs and sockets and produces one complete part every six seconds. Matt Davidson, Production Engineering Manager at Deutsch UK, said: “The new machine is extremely reliable and the amount of operator adjustment necessary has been far less than we expected.” Deutsch UK, a specialist manufacturer of interconnection equipment for harsh environments, required a flexible solution to match its process requirements at its manufacturing plant at St Leonards on Sea. By replacing a conventional rotary table with a robot, when product changes demand, Deutsch is able to reprogramme the machine instead of investing in new tooling.

Column: Fire Flower #51

The DS was Nintendo’s biggest gamble in years: up against the PSP which is a much more powerful multimedia machine, the DS was expected by the industry to be an out and out failure. Even the company pitched it as the “Third Pillar” alongside the Game Boy Advance and the GameCube. It was supposed to be another string to the bow and a kind of stop gap between the GBA and the Game Boy Next, or Game Boy Evolution, or the Game Boy Revolution or even the Game Boy Superior. Whatever. The fact is that Nintendo could not have anticipated the success of the machine – its flagship title was a rehash of a game that was released as a system seller on another machine. Ridiculous.

(Nanowerk News) Japanese scientists have made a micro-sized sewing machine to sew long threads of DNA into shape. The work published in the Royal Society of Chemistry journal Lab on a Chip demonstrates a unique way to manipulate delicate DNA chains without breaking them ("On-site manipulation of single chromosomal DNA molecules by using optically driven microstructures" – free access article).

Rare 'star-making machine' found in distant universe

Astronomers have uncovered an extreme stellar machine -- a galaxy in the very remote universe pumping out stars at a surprising rate of up to 4,000 per year. In comparison, our own Milky Way galaxy turns out an average of just 10 stars per year.
