EMI Sets Up Its Own Online Store As YouTube Tries Selling Music

Lots of folks are trying to figure out new business models in the music space, and here we have two separate big companies testing out ideas that seem unlikely to work all that well. First up is EMI, the big record label that keeps insisting that its going a different route but can't seem to reign in its lawyers from taking the same old route. This time around, it's launching its own music download site, where it's promising lots of extras and goodies -- including some stuff for free. It will be interesting to see how the actual site is set up, but the idea of setting up just a label specific site seems destined to fail. People want a one-stop shop. They don't want to have to know that the music they like is on EMI. Imagine, back when people bought CDs, if they had to go to a different store for each record label.

Measuring the true success of OpenOffice.org

Is success measured in downloads, or up-loads ? are bugs filed as good as bugs fixed ? are volunteer marketers as valuable as volunteer developers ? If we have lots of bugs filed and lots of volunteer management material is that success ? is the pace of change important ? Does successful QA exist to create process to slow and reject changes, or by accelerating inclusion of fixes improve quality ? Is success having complete, up-to-date and detailed specifications for every feature ? Is success getting everyone to slavishly obey laborious multi-step processes, before every commit ? Alternatively does success come through attracting and empowering developers, who have such fun writing the code that they volunteer their life, allegiance and dreams to improve it ?

Lots of updates and parrots since the initial release of Pirates

Destructoid writes: "There have been a significant amount of changes to Pirates of the Burning Sea since it was shown last year at Gen Con. There is now more dueling, new graphics and cities, more pillaging, and even more "piratical pets." I like parrots, to be honest, but I've always been afraid of how long they live. Could you imagine having to chill with a bird for your entire life, nonethless one that takes dumps on your shoulder for decades?

Google Translate for iPhone has lots of potential

Google recently launched a new translation tool for iPhone that turns your device into a free (plus data costs) and very good pocket translator. That got me thinking though — Google has the technology, and ability to make this application far better than any other pocket translator, and a lot more useful than it is already.
