The Art Trading Fund: Getting Desperate

Liz Gunnison has an interesting take on the news that Charles Saatchi has been appointed an advisor to the Art Trading Fund. You might recognise the name: I said twice last summer that it was doomed to fail, and this news only confirms my take. Let's start with the fund's assets under management: in May 2007 it had reportedly raised £10 million (that's pounds); the following month, Kit Roane reported that "it has attracted about $40 million from investors". Now, a year later, we're told that the fund "closed in August 2007, with a capitalization of $10 million". Oops. We're not told how many outside investors there are in the fund, but my guess is that it's somewhere between zero and five.

Training trade union safety reps in the links between workplace safety and union organisation is a top priority for TUC. Liz Rees, head of TUC's education service, made this plain in a new interview with the trade union safety magazine Hazards. She said being a trade union safety rep is not just about what you know, it's about what you do - involving members, uncovering problems and, crucially, demanding action. 'Safety rep training is the jewel in the crown of TUC Education,' she said, adding: 'We aim to provide everything a safety rep needs to know to represent their members effectively, and to assist and support in dealing with workplace problems, supporting members and organising for health and safety.' TUC's courses are free to safety reps from affiliated unions and come with accreditation from the National Open College Network (NOCN

Rogers' iPhone pricing spawns online protest

Canadian iPhone fans have launched an online petition protesting against pricing plans that Rogers Wireless Inc. will offer customers when the coveted touch-screen device arrives in Canada on July 11. So far, the website claims that more than 20,000 people have added their names or handles to the online petition at ruinediphone.com since it was launched Friday. The creators say they plan to send a hard copy of all the comments posted on the site to parent Rogers Communications Inc.'s headquarters in Toronto to demonstrate users' "indignation." Although there have been a few complaints regarding Rogers' pricing plans, most of the calls the company has received about the iPhone have come from customers wanting to know when it will be available and where they can buy it, Rogers spokeswoman Liz Hamilton said.
