Navitar Announces Four New Fixed Focal Length Lenses for SWIR Cameras

Navitar Inc. has introduced four fixed focal length imaging optics designed for SWIR (short wave infrared) cameras and applications. Lens focal lengths include two 25mm designs, a 35mm and a 50mm design. Including 4 models, fixed focal length imaging optics offer 2 versions with 25 mm focal length and 2 with 35 and 50 mm design, respectively. Constructed for rugged environments, SWIR lenses come standard with thumb screws for locking the focus and iris functions. Designed to cover 1 in. sensors, lenses offer high resolution images and transmission in 700-1,900 nm wavelength of 75% or better, and are suited for variety of imaging applications where SWIR cameras are employed.

Spin Control: New Technique Sorts Nanotubes by Length

In a schematic of NIST's length separation technique for carbon nanotubes (l.), the nanotubes start at the bottom of a dense fluid. When spun in a centrifuge, the nanotubes begin to migrate through the fluid driven by their buoyancy, but the longer ones move faster, spreading them out by length. Photos (r.) shows a typical sample at the start and after 94 hours of spinning at 1257 radians per second (roughly 12,000 RPM). Credit: NIST

The Line & Length Monday XI

My laptop works again, so back to the blogging. First up, there is a new feature for you: the Line & Length Monday XI, a weekly test of your cricketing knowledge. Here are today's XI questions; check back on Wednesday for the answers.

Spin Control: New Technique Sorts Nanotubes By Length

Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have reported a new technique to sort batches of carbon nanotubes by length using high-speed centrifuges. Many potential applications for carbon nanotubes depend on the lengths of these microscopic cylinders, and one of the most important features of the new technique, say the scientists, is that it should be easily scalable to produce industrial quantities of high-quality nanotubes.

The C-16 Telescope

The telescope is more than 2,000 times better than the human eye at capturing light, which astronomers consider more important than magnification. The C-16 has a useful magnification range of 60 to 900 power (determined by dividing the focal length of the telescope by the focal length of the eyepiece).

Panasonic TX37LZD85 Review

With styling reminiscent of their PZ85 series of Plasma TV's, Panasonic's LZD85 range of LCD's feature a slim profile, glossy black finish and a frame that curves subtly backwards along the full length of its sides. A feature which looks destined to become synonymous with flat panel TV's from Panasonic, an elliptical silver trim at the base of the screen actually houses a full length single speaker.

UK Government May Extend Copyright, Despite Saying It Wouldn't

Back in 2006, you may recall that the UK released the so-called Gowers' Report, which was a look into various issues having to do with copyright law in the UK. I pointed out, at the time, that the report was too balanced for its own good, focusing on how to "balance" one side's views against the other's -- without recognizing there could be paths that made everyone better off. The one thing it got sort of right, was in making it quite clear that extending the length of copyright was a bad, bad idea and totally unnecessary. In fact, Gowers later admitted that he toned down the report, since the actual evidence he found suggested that things would be better if copyright length were shortened -- but he knew suggesting that would lead to screams of outrage from the industry.
